Vespero – Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure

They left us with great expectations after By the Waters of Tomorrow [2010], which were confirmed with Droga [2013]. Last year we were amazed by Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M. and only a few months after that they left us speechless with the consistency of this year’s Lique Mekwas. Vespero is not just the best band ever from Russia, but also a creative machine that seems gigantic when on stage. Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, recorded at The Union of Theatre Artists of Astrakhan on May 15th 2015 is but a simple confirmation.

Space Ritual of the Caspian

Focusing on the evolution of Vespero makes it easy to perceive their uniqueness within the contemporary progressive and psychedelic scene. A uniqueness that, apart from the distinctive sound and the mark they have made in space rock, is reinforced by their origin and their geographical isolation.

With Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure Vespero make clear that they can convey the quality of their studio albums on stage, which is quite reasonable if we take into account the improvisational nature of their music. The six-member band (plus Pavel Alekseev on sax) is in top form and their bond seems to stem from a spiritual connection between the members which cannot be simply mastered after many rehearsals. With an excess of comfort they manage to perform convincingly the most psychedelic parts while their playing abilities during fusion moments is breathtaking.

The songs were chosen mainly from Lique Mekwas and Droga [2013], creating the aforementioned contrast between the fusion character of the first and the more psychedelic of the second. The unreleased Shum-Shir sounds more like a piece omitted at the last moment from Lique Mekwas. The only taste from old material is given by the wonderful Tall Tree from By the Waters of Tomorrow [2010]. The lack of further older material may disappoint some, but they can find comfort in the previous five live albums released by Vespero.

It is a shame that such a unique band has never toured extensively. Of course this may add even more points to their particularity. Until they eventually come to Greece or we travel to Astrakhan, we will be satisfied by listening to Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, i.e. Space Ritual of the Caspian Sea.

The truth is that there are not too many contemporary bands I would love to see live. What is certain is that Vespero are among the top bands in that list and the proof lies in the amazing Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, which is a wild space – prog festival, with material from this year’s Lique Mekwas and Droga [2013] plus Tall Tree from By the Waters of Tomorrow [2010] and unreleased Shum-shir. Jamming energy, technical skills, awesome psychedelic atmosphere and unrivaled groove (especially in tracks from Lique Mekwas) coexist and enchant everyone through the incredible bond of Vespero. After listening to Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure it is simply impossible to not want to see them live.

Μας άφησαν με μεγάλες προσδοκίες μετά το By the Waters of Tomorrow του 2010, τις οποίες επιβεβαίωσαν με το Droga του 2013. Πέρυσι μας κατέπληξαν με το Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M. και λίγους μόλις μήνες μετά μας άφησαν άφωνους με την ποιοτική συνέπεια  του φετινού Lique Mekwas. Οι Vespero δεν είναι απλώς η καλύτερη μπάντα όλων των εποχών από τη Ρωσία, αλλά και μία δημιουργική μηχανή που γιγαντώνεται όταν εμφανίζεται ζωντανά. Το Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, ηχογραφημένο στο The Union of Theatre Artists του Astrakhan στις 15-05-2015 είναι απλώς μία πανηγυρική επιβεβαίωση.

Το Space Ritual της Κασπίας

Μελετώντας την εξέλιξη της δισκογραφίας των Vespero γίνεται αμέσως αντιληπτή η μοναδικότητά τους στη σύγχρονή progressive και ψυχεδελική σκηνή. Μια μοναδικότητα που, πέρα από τον ξεχωριστό ήχο και αποτύπωμα που έχουν αφήσει στο space rock, ενισχύεται από την καταγωγή τους και τη γεωγραφική τους απομόνωση.

Με το Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure κάνουν σαφές ότι μπορούν να μεταφέρουν την ποιότητα των studio δουλειών τους και στο σανίδι, πράγμα λογικό αν λάβουμε υπόψιν τον αυτοσχεδιαστικό χαρακτήρα της μουσικής τους. Η εξαμελής μπάντα (συν τον guest σαξοφωνίστα Pavel Alekseev) δείχνει κάτι παραπάνω από καλοπροβαρισμένη, αφού το δέσιμό τους μοιάζει να απορρέει από μια πιο πνευματική σχέση μεταξύ των μελών, η οποία δεν μπορεί να κατακτηθεί απλά με πολλές πρόβες. Με μια περίσσια άνεση καταφέρνουν να αποδώσουν πειστικότατα τα πιο ψυχεδελικά σημεία, ενώ και η παικτική τους ικανότητα στις πιο fusion στιγμές είναι αποστομωτική.

Η επιλογή των κομματιών έχει γίνει κυρίως από το πρόσφατο Lique Mekwas και από το Droga του 2013, δημιουργώντας την προαναφερθείσα καλοδεχούμενη αντίθεση ανάμεσα στον πιο fusion χαρακτήρα του πρώτου και τον πιο ψυχεδελικό του δευτέρου. Το ακυκλοφόρητο Shum-Shir μοιάζει πιο πολύ ως κομμάτι που την τελευταία στιγμή δεν μπήκε στο Lique Mekwas. Η μοναδική βουτιά σε πιο παλιό υλικό γίνεται με το εκπληκτικό Tall Tree από το By the Waters of Tomorrow του 2010. Η έλλειψη περαιτέρω παλαιότερου υλικού μπορεί να απογοητεύσει κάποιους, αλλά για αυτούς υπάρχουν οι άλλοι πέντε live δίσκοι που έχουν κυκλοφορήσει οι Vespero μέχρι σήμερα.

Είναι κρίμα που αυτή η τόσο ιδιαίτερη περίπτωση μουσικού σχήματος δεν έχει περιοδεύσει ποτέ εκτεταμένα, αφού ζωντανά δείχνει να κεντάει. Βέβαια αυτό ίσως προθέτει ακόμα περισσότερους πόντους στην ιδιαιτερότητά τους. Μέχρι λοιπόν να έρθουν κάποια στιγμή από τα μέρη μας ή να ταξιδέψουμε εμείς μέχρι το Astrachan, ας μείνουμε ικανοποιημένοι με το Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, το Space Ritual της Κασπίας θάλασσας.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι δεν είναι πάρα πολλές οι σύγχρονες μπάντες που θα ήθελα πάρα πολύ να δω ζωντανά. Το βέβαιο είναι ότι μεταξύ των κορυφαίων της λίστας αυτής είναι οι Vespero και η απόδειξη βρίσκεται και στο καταπληκτικό Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure, το οποίο αποτελεί ένα ξέφρενο space – prog πανηγύρι, με υλικό από το φετινό Lique Mekwas και το Droga συν το Tall Tree από το By the Waters of Tomorrow του 2010 και το ακυκλοφόρητο Shum-Shir. Jamming ενέργεια, τεχνική αυστηρότητα, επιβλητική ψυχεδελική ατμόσφαιρα και ασυναγώνιστο groove (ειδικά στα κομμάτια του Lique Mekwas) συνυπάρχουν και μαγεύουν μέσα από το απίστευτο δέσιμο των Vespero. Ακούγοντας το Azmari: Abyssinian Liventure είναι απλά αδύνατον να μη θέλει κανείς να τους δει ζωντανά.
