Pixie Ninja – Colours out of Space

Pixie Ninja was formed by Jostein Haugen and Marius Leirånes (both play guitar / bass / keys), who released the very interesting Ultrasound in 2017 along with Mattias Olsson (drums), Johan Hals Jørgensen (keyboards) and Ketil Vestrum Einarsen (flute), an album that, despite its retro principles, sounded very fresh (our reviews here). Continuing on the dark paths that marked Ultrasound, in Colors out of Space, Pixie Ninja presents an instrumental concept album based on stories by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. In addition to Haugen, Leirånes and Olsson, the line-up here includes Fredrik Klingwal (keyboards – member of Anima Morte), with a number of additional musicians participating in the recordings: Tiger Olsson (vocals), Akaba (vocals), Hampus Nordgren-Hemlin (vocals, instrument, guitar), Leo Svensson-Zander (cello), Fredrik Carlzon (French horn – he and M. Olsson played on Glue Works by Gösta Berlings Saga).

When Scandinavian dark prog meets H.P. Lovecraft

If you had listened to Ultrasound, the first feeling you get after the 44 minutes of Colors out of Space is that Pixie Ninja has changed level in many areas, although the basic principles and characteristics of their music remain the same. Their great ideas, this time presented in a very structured and solid context, form a clear artistic proposal. The feeling of an experimental project that was releasing its debut here has been replaced by the certainty of a complete band with a clear musical vision. Experimentation and mixing of elements remain at the forefront, channeled with greater confidence and perfectly combined, aiming to the optimal flow of ideas.

The fact that Pixie Ninja made their musical vision clearer does not mean that they tried to make their music more accessible. A large part of the experimental side of progressive rock from the 70s onwards parade through the five compositions, mixed with later experimental manifestations of rock and electronic music. Ambient and progressive electronic are the basis of their sound, but the extensions that are added to it escape in multiple directions. There are post-rock developments, krautrock experimentation, industrial aesthetics and a strange symphonic element, which, paradoxically, fits perfectly and takes off the album.

The five-piece concept based on short stories by H.P. Lovecraft achieves its goal despite the absence of lyrics. The dark Scandinavian aesthetic and the great narrative component with which the compositions flow persuade the listener that he / she actually is in the dark texts written by the patriarch of horror literature. From the beginning with the self-titled epic track to the more “relaxed” ending with Strange Days, Pixie Ninja create their own world and effortlessly invite the listener. This is perhaps the greatest asset of an album that lacks mediocre moments and remains oriented throughout its duration.

The production, which is more than perfect, also helps a lot in the success of what Pixie Ninja is trying to do in Colors out of Space. In particular, the mixing of the instruments is amazing and the success in creating a sound that comes from the 70s, but at the same time sounds very modern is just marvelous.

Colors out of Space is the passage of a group of musicians from the category of an interesting project to that of a band that will keep our interest for its next steps. Scandinavian progressive rock musicians are proving once again that for many years they have been carrying the genre forward in its new era.

The wonderful debut of Pixie Ninja had created many expectations and impatience for the second album of the Norwegian-Swedish band. You see, the intense experimental element and soundscape character of their music had secured an indefinable interest. All this was solemnly confirmed in Colors out of Space. Pixie Ninja’s sophomore album is clearly darker, heavier, but also more solid than Ultrasound (2017), with consistently strong electronic elements and samplings, but also with a fairly strong industrial style that blends brilliantly with the band’s vintage instruments and its retro and yet modern progressive rock.

The five tracks on the album are heavily influenced by short stories of H.P. Lovecraft and this plays a catalytic role in the style and partial change of Pixie Ninja’s sound. Especially when listening to the album with headphones, the haunting atmosphere is riveting and the element of horror affects the listener through the multi-layered sound that is masterfully rendered in Mattias Olsson’s production.

Although the compositional depth is fatally sacrificed to some extent on the altar of experimentation, Colors out of Space is arguably one of the most interesting instrumental prog albums of recent years.

Όταν το σκοτεινό prog της Σκανδιναβίας συναντά τον H.P. Lovecraft

Η πρώτη αίσθηση που δίνει η ακρόαση του Colours out of Space σε όποιον τους είχε γνωρίσει από το Ultrasound είναι πως οι Pixie Ninja έχουν ανέβει επίπεδο σε πολλούς τομείς, παρόλο που οι βασικές αρχές και τα χαρακτηριστικά της μουσικής τους παραμένουν τα ίδια. Οι σπουδαίες ιδέες τους, αυτή τη φορά παρουσιάζονται σε ένα πολύ δομημένο και δουλεμένο πλαίσιο, δημιουργώντας μία ξεκάθαρη μουσική πρόταση. Η αίσθηση ενός πειραματικού project που έβγαζε το ντεμπούτο του εδώ έχει αντικατασταθεί με την αίσθηση της πλήρους μπάντας με ξεκάθαρο μουσικό όραμα. Ο πειραματισμός και η μίξη των ειδών παραμένουν στην εμπροσθοφυλακή του εγχειρήματος, διοχετευμένα με μεγαλύτερη σιγουριά και άψογα συγκολλημένα με σκοπό τη βέλτιστη ροή των ιδεών.

Το ότι οι Pixie Ninja έκαναν πιο ξεκάθαρο το μουσικό τους όραμα δεν σημαίνει ότι προσπάθησαν να κάνουν και τη μουσική τους πιο εύκολα προσβάσιμη. Στις πέντε συνθέσεις του δίσκου παρελαύνει ένα μεγάλο μέρος της πειραματικής πλευράς του progressive rock από τα 70s και μετά, αναμειγμένο με μεταγενέστερες πειραματικές εκφάνσεις της rock και της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Το ambient και progressive electronic υφίσταται ως η βάση του ηχητικού οικοδομήματος, αλλά οι προεκτάσεις οι οποίες προστίθενται πάνω σε αυτό ξεφεύγουν σε πολλαπλές κατευθύνσεις. Τοποθετημένες καίρια στις συνθέσεις συναντούμε post-rock αναπτύξεις, krautrock πειραματισμό, industrial αισθητική και μια περίεργη συμφωνικότητα, που όλως παραδόξως κουμπώνει τέλεια και απογειώνει το τελικό αποτέλεσμα.

Το concept πέντε κομματιών βασισμένα σε μικρές ιστορίες του H.P. Lovecraft πετυχαίνει το στόχο του παρά την έλλειψη στίχων. Η σκοτεινή Σκανδιναβική αισθητική και η φοβερή αφηγηματικότητα με την οποία ρέουν οι συνθέσεις πείθουν τον ακροατή ότι βρίσκεται μέσα στα σκοτεινά κείμενα που έγραψε ο πατριάρχης της λογοτεχνίας τρόμου. Από την έναρξη με το ομώνυμο επικό κομμάτι ως το «χαλαρό» κλείσιμο με το Strange Days, οι Pixie Ninja δημιουργούν ένα δικό τους κόσμο και αβίαστα βάζουν τον ακροατή μέσα του. Αυτό είναι ίσως και το μεγαλύτερο ατού ενός δίσκου που στερείται μέτριων στιγμών και παραμένει προσανατολισμένος σε όλη του τη διάρκεια.

Στην επιτυχία όσων αποπειρούνται οι Pixie Ninja στο Colours out of Space βοηθά πολύ και η ηχητική παραγωγή που είναι κάτι παραπάνω από άψογη. Ειδικότερα, πρέπει να υπογραμμιστεί η εκπληκτική μίξη των οργάνων και η επιτυχία δημιουργίας ενός ήχου που ναι μεν προέρχεται μεν από τα 70s, αλλά ταυτόχρονα ακούγεται πολύ σύγχρονος. Σε αυτή την επιτυχία φυσικά τον μεγαλύτερο ρόλο παίζουν οι ίδιοι οι μουσικοί, οι οποίοι με τα παιξίματά τους και τις ενορχηστρωτικές τους επιλογές απογειώνουν τις συνθετικές ιδέες τους σε κάτι ανώτερο από το σύνολο τους.

Το Colours out of Space είναι το πέρασμα μιας ομάδας μουσικών από την κατηγορία του ενδιαφέροντος project σε αυτή της μπάντας που θα περιμένουμε με ανυπομονησία τις επόμενες δουλειές της. Οι progressive rock μουσικοί της Σκανδιναβίας αποδεικνύουν για μία ακόμα φορά ότι εδώ και πολλά χρόνια κουβαλούν ως μπροστάρηδες το είδος στη νέα του εποχή.

Όσο όμορφο ήταν το ντεμπούτο των Pixie Ninja, άλλες τόσες προσδοκίες και ανυπομονησία είχε δημιουργήσει για το δεύτερο album του Νορβηγο-σουηδικού σχήματος. Βλέπετε, το έντονο πειραματικό στοιχείο και ο αρκετά soundscape χαρακτήρας της μουσικής τους είχε εξασφαλίσει ένα απροσδιόριστο ενδιαφέρον. Όλα αυτά επιβεβαιώθηκαν πανηγυρικά στο Colours out of Space. Το δεύτερο album των Pixie Ninja είναι σαφώς πιο σκοτεινό, σκληρό, αλλά και ομοιογενές από το Ultrasound (2017), με σταθερά έντονα τα ηλεκτρονικά στοιχεία και τα samplings, αλλά και με αρκετά έντονο industrial ύφος που συνδυάζεται εκπληκτικά με τα vintage όργανα και το retro ωστόσο μοντέρνο progressive rock της μπάντας.

Τα πέντε κομμάτια του δίσκου είναι έντονα επηρεασμένα από μικρές ιστορίες του H.P. Lovecraft κι αυτό παίζει καταλυτικό ρόλο στο ύφος και στη μερική στροφή του ήχου των Pixie Ninja. Ειδικά όταν ακούει κανείς το album με ακουστικά, η στοιχειωτική ατμόσφαιρα είναι καθηλωτική και το στοιχείο του τρόμου επιδρά μέσα από τα πολυεπίπεδα ηχητικά στρώματα που αποδίδονται μαεστρικά στην παραγωγή του Mattias Olsson.

Αν και το συνθετικό βάθος μοιραία θυσιάζεται σε ένα βαθμό στο βωμό του πειραματισμού, το Colours out of Space είναι ένα αδιαμφισβήτητα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα instrumental prog albums των τελευταίων ετών.
