20. Lunatic Soul – Fractured

“The experimentation on this album has to do mainly with its concept and secondly with the music itself. Fractured is a quite personal album where Duda pulled off to channel his mood and energy aiming to achieve a sense of catharsis. A man who had been through thick and thin lately, but he got stronger and more mature out of this and through this catharsis he became able to move on into the future.”

“…Tony Allen applies his ever-present polyrhythmic sensitivities over ostinato bass lines and sexy themes on the wind instruments that will send you straight to the dance floor; the eleven brand-new and beautiful compositions, whose best part is written by Mr. Allen, will take care of that. If you want to know what it is all about, think of the psychedelic afro-funk bands of Fela Kuti accepting the invitation of Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie for a frenzied party in Lagos. And just to make sure that the live feeling will be captured, it was recorded live, mixed and mastered on analogue tape. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

17. Grails – Chalice Hymnal

“Grails prove with Chalice Hymnal that originality is not necessarily the desired result in music. By adding some new elements in relation to the style of their previous album and by using their past as a compass, they managed to give us the most mature album of their career so far, based on composition and orchestration and present an album that will probably earn the title of Black Album in their discography.”

“If the album had actually been released in that time from a known band it would be commemorated to this day, while if it had been released from an unrecognized one, the vinyl would be sold at exorbitant prices and would adorn every record collection of the followers of obscure prog sound. Imperative to listen, among the best releases of this year at least.”

“The debut of Skog Under Jord is a hidden gem in the contemporary underground rock scene. The prog / psych of the Swedes is based on pure jamming character, with amazing flow and development and fiery changes. The typical dark melodiousness of the Nordic prog of the 70s reigns in both epics that make up this amazing album. I’m trying to remember the last time everything was so perfect in an album with two one-side songs. I honestly don’t remember.”

15. Arabs in Aspic – Syndenes Magi

“Arabs in Aspic offered a vintage heavy prog gem and it should be arguably held as the most accomplished album of their career. In spite of the lengthy compositions, the tunes are mature with very specific goals and direction. We invest on their quality and we are grateful to them.”

14. Hollow Earth – Out of Atlantis

“Hollow Earth compose music as if they have many years of experience under their belt. Τhey seem to be fully aware that this kind of music has a meaning only if it is played with this old-fashioned, analogue and warm sound and also if you filter the horizons of your influences. A new-founded band that came literally from the leftfield and they don’t simply tickle our fancy but their album is one of the candidates for the gems of the year and compete with the rest summits of the progressive albums that came out in 2017.”

“King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple and many more influences from the legendary 70s coexist in the magnificent compositions of the Swedes which emanate an intense vintage feeling but they possess a gorgeous character thanks to the impeccable playing and the chemistry. Especially when it is solo-time, you can tell that the band is tight as it gets, with solid ideas about jamming and well-rounded views on the vintage prog.”

13. Elder – Reflections of a Floating World

“Elder focused more on the structure of the compositions and presented something more complete than their previous work. Though it may initially tire some due to the complex compositions, the first repetitions reverse this impression. I think the Bostoners crafted their most interesting album decorating a whole music scene. I doubt if this genre has something better to show us this year!”

“Reflections of a Floating World is probably their best moment with its epic sounds transfering the listener into the orbit of an exciting journey. References to the 70s are the permanent inspiration for the band, which is now enriched by the late 60s, post-rock and undoubtedly by Mastodon. The unpretentiously large compositions are the field where colossal riffs set up unthinkable roots to distant galaxies, raiding towards unexplored worlds.”

12. Threshold –  Legends of the Shires

 “…Threshold still write something only if it is worthy and adds to the song and not just filling it (be it a theme, or a solo, or anything else), their lengthier compositions never make you feel that you do listen to something lengthy, they compose catchy choruses and melodies and they maintain this ability of theirs to communicate with people who are not musicians in spite of their tremendous technical skills.”

11. Alfa Mist – Antiphon

“With the project Antiphon, British musician and producer Alfa Mist adds his own “voice”, that is view, to this recent freshening of jazz, performed by artists such as Kamasi Washington and Yussef Kamaal. The album combines mellow jazzy hip-hop of the Nujabes school with free bebop improvisation. With the opening ten-minute Keep On, a complete artistic universe of urban melancholy, warm melodies and mild experimentation is revealed. The simple structure of hip-hop is in the background, while the first and foremost role is played by the technical and imaginative playing of wind instruments, guitar, keyboards and percussion instruments. Naturally, there is introversive environment, but it does not rule out escalations, like in Errors.“

10. Pain Of Salvation – In The Passing Light of Day

“This is what happens in In the Passing Light of Day: as loss covers the last Nick Cave album, as the upcoming death touches Bowie in his swan song, so In the Passing Light of Day is emotionally charged by its own condition and feelings. Pain, anger, creation but the difference with the aforementioned masterpieces is that at the end through a marathon of 71:46 minutes there is genuine hope. This alone is more than wonderful, isn’t it?”

“In The Passing Light of Day is pretty much straight forward but also a bit proggier than the Road Salt albums and quite heavy. There is a lot of music to be digested which makes the album more of a grower. The vocals of Daniel Gildenlöw are as excellent as usual, as well as some of the guitar riffs which in the heavy tracks reach even a more djent like sound. While not one of the bands best albums, with a few drawbacks, this is very good return for Pain of Salvation which will surely please most fans.”

09. Yolk – Solar

“…Yolk continue where they had left off with last year’s You Decide. They managed to recap a cycle, regaining their mood and their passion. In any case, their talent is uncontested. We are dealing with a band that’s constantly in motion concerning live appearances, always anxious and ready to incorporate new forms of expression within progressive rock.”

08. Soft Power – In A Brown Study

“The psychedelic days of San Francisco of the 1960s are displayed in perfect harmony with the exotic, almost otherworldly songwriting of Bo Hansson. The dreamy jazz-folk of Ragnarök of their first sublime debut back in 1976 is combined euphorically with the progressiveness of jazz mastery of Pekka Pohjola’s Wigwam and his mates. Thoughts, ideas and inspirations end up, most of the times, echoing through many and wondrous surprises that make their appearance naturally.”

“Anything beautiful that comes to mind originating from the North is here to be found. From Wigwam, Pärson Sound and a healthy dose of Can influence to the great Dungen. Basically, it is no-brainer to say that the basis is the combination of jazz with the late-1960s / early-1970s psychedelic scene. In A Brown Study turned out to be a genuinely pleasant surprise, a guaranteed enjoyment for the seasoned listeners and those who long for acid journeys.”

07. Enslaved – E

“Enslaved honor their roots but at the same time you feel they are a bit detached from the blackness of their past and they do it with a lot of grace and style that some bands would envy. Perhaps they are the band that combines progressive with the extreme metal sound better than any other. No, there is no bad or average song on the record, there is no filler and for many it could and will be among the top albums of the year. One thing is certain: it’s their best album since Axioma with their interest, appetite and musicality still soaring.”

06. Leprous – Malina

“Malina is a diverse, but also very cohesive album, as if every song is a chapter of a book. Granted, it is a release that composition-wise did not break new ground at all times, but sonically did go further while in some parts it portrayed a different, unexpected side of the band, preserving their features and personal style.”

“Α great return album by the Norwegians, who, after “testing the waters” of change with Coal and The Congregation, seem to have solidified on their style and found the near-perfect balance. Muse, Radiohead και Mastodon mix in the sound, which retains its heaviness, resulting in a work with plenty of character. If this is Leprous’ light side, we surely want more.”

05. Caligula’s Horse – In Contact

“Glaring weaknesses are absent in Ιn Contact, the scattered references to their existing back catalogue of the band are there in order to interconnect all these phases. As a whole, In Contact is a mature statement from the band that they should be held as one of the very few spearheads in the progressive metal firmament. Until the audience collectively catches up with the importance of this work, it will sit easily on the top of my list.”

“The Tower is the antithesis of a musical tower of Babel. In the tower of Motorpsycho all the tribes and species communicate perfectly with each other, creating a musical mosaic that every seasoned listener should pay attention to. In my opinion, it is the best thing they have done since The Death Defying Unicorn. While we absorb it, it may make it to the top of their discography. Twenty-six years after their debut, by the way…“

Το Fractured είναι αρκετά προσωπικό άλμπουμ για τον Duda, ο οποίος καταφέρνει και διοχετεύσει όλη του την διάθεση και την ενέργεια προσπαθώντας να περάσει μια αίσθηση κάθαρσης. Ενός ανθρώπου που πέρασε διάφορα προβλήματα, αλλά κατάφερε να ωριμάσει μέσα από αυτά και να έχει την κάθαρση που του χρειάζεται για να πορευτεί στο μέλλον.”

“…ο Tony Allen εφαρμόζει τις πανταχού παρούσες πολυρυθμικές ευαισθησίες του πάνω από οστινάτο μπασογραμμές και σέξυ θέματα στα πνευστά, που θα σε στείλουν κατευθείαν στην πίστα για χορό. Οι 11 καινούριες και όμορφες συνθέσεις στο δίσκο – από τις οποίες οι περισσότερες γράφτηκαν από τον κ. Allen θα το καταστήσουν σίγουρο αυτό. Αν πρέπει να ξέρεις τι παίζει εδώ, φαντάσου τις ψυχεδελικές αφροφάνκ μπάντες του Fela Kuti να αποδέχονται την πρόσκληση των Miles Davis και Dizzy Gillespie για ένα φρενήρες live στο Λάγος. Και για να σιγουρευτούμε ότι η οργανικότητα του live θα αποτυπωθεί, το άλμπουμ ηχογραφήθηκε ζωντανά, μιξαρίστηκε και μαστερίστηκε σε αναλογική ταινία. Δεν γίνεται καλύτερο από αυτό.”

Το Reminiscenceαποτελεί μία σοβαρή υπόμνηση αυτής της αναβίωσης. Σπεύστε άφοβα και αφουγκραστείτε.”

Με άξονα τα επιθετικά κιθαριστικά riffs, το απόλυτα ακριβές rhythm section και τα παθιασμένα φωνητικά, οι Heat Exchange μας προσφέρουν 10 σφιχτοδεμένα και πολυποίκιλα κομμάτια…”

“Οι Grails με το Chalice Hymnal αποδεικνύουν ότι η πρωτοτυπία δεν είναι απαραίτητα το ζητούμενο στη μουσική. Προσθέτοντας κάποια καινούργια στοιχεία σε σχέση με το ύφος του προηγούμενου δίσκου τους και χρησιμοποιώντας το παρελθόν τους ως πυξίδα, κατάφεραν να μας δώσουν τον πιο ώριμο δίσκο της μέχρι τώρα πορείας τους, δίνοντας βάση στην σύνθεση και την ενορχήστρωση και παρουσιάζοντας ένα μουσικό έργο που πιθανότατα θα πάρει τον τίτλο του Black Album της δισκογραφίας τους.”

Οι φίλοι του είδους, καθώς και οι ακόλουθοι του γκρουπ, σίγουρα θα μείνουν ευχαριστημένοι, ενώ οι φίλοι της ευρύτερα «πειραματικής» σκηνής θα βρούνε αρκετές εισόδους μέσα στον δίσκο…”

“Αν ο δίσκος είχε πραγματικά κυκλοφορήσει στην εποχή εκείνη από μία γνωστή μπάντα θα μνημονευόταν έως και σήμερα, ενώ αν είχε κυκλοφορήσει από μία παραγνωρισμένη, το βινύλιο θα πωλούταν σε εξωφρενικές τιμές και θα κοσμούσε κάθε δισκοθήκη των ακόλουθων του obscure prog ήχου. Επιβεβλημένο άκουσμα, ανάμεσα στις καλύτερες κυκλοφορίες τουλάχιστον αυτής της χρονιάς.”

“TΤο prog / psych των Σουηδών βασίζεται σε jamming χαρακτήρα, με συγκλονιστική ροή και ανάπτυξη και εκρηξιγενείς αλλαγές. Η τυπική σκοτεινή μελωδικότητα του σκανδιναβικού prog των 70s βασιλεύει και στα δύο epics που συναποτελούν αυτό το εκπληκτικό album. Προσπαθώ να θυμηθώ την τελευταία φορά που όλα ήταν τόσο άψογα σε δύο one-side songs στο ίδιο album. Ειλικρινά δε θυμάμαι.”

“…οι Arabs in Aspic προσέφεραν ένα vintage heavy prog διαμάντι και δικαίως θα θεωρηθεί ως ο πιο ολοκληρωμένος δίσκος της καριέρας τους. Παρόλες τις μακρόσυρτες συνθέσεις, τα κομμάτια είναι μεστά με συγκεκριμένο προσανατολισμό και στόχευση. Επενδύουμε στην ποιότητά τους και τους ευγνωμονούμε.”

“Στην πέμπτη studio δουλειά τους παρουσιάζονται καλύτεροι από ποτέ, χαρίζοντας έναν από τους πληρέστερους retro-prog δίσκους που θα ακούσετε φέτος. Οι τρεις μεγάλες σε διάρκεια συνθέσεις που περιέχονται στο album δεν κουράζουν στο ελάχιστο, αφού έχουν την σωστή περιπετειώδη prog εξέλιξη και κυρίως εμπνευσμένα θέματα και μελωδίες.”

“…οι Hollow Earth συνθέτουν μουσική σαν να κουβαλούν χρόνια εμπειρίας και επαγγελματικής δουλειάς, ενώ έχουν πλήρη επίγνωση πως το vintage prog μπορεί να παιχτεί μόνο αν αποδοθεί με αυτό τον παλαιό, αναλογικό, ζεστό ήχο και μόνο αν φιλτράρεις τους ορίζοντες των επιρροών σου. Μια νεοσύστατη μπάντα η οποία ξεπήδησε στην κυριολεξία από το πουθενά, δεν κερδίζει απλώς τις εντυπώσεις αλλά θέτει σοβαρή υποψηφιότητα ώστε να ο δίσκος της να αποτελέσει ένα από τα διαμάντια της χρονιάς και να συναγωνιστεί επάξια τις φετινές κορυφές του προοδευτικού ήχου.”

“King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple και αρκετές ακόμα επιρροές από τα θρυλικά 70’s συνυπάρχουν στις υπέροχες συνθέσεις των Σουηδών, δοσμένες με τρόπο που ενώ παραπέμπουν έντονα σε ακόμα μια vintage κυκλοφορία, εντούτοις διαθέτουν εξαιρετικό χαρακτήρα που οφείλεται τόσο στο άρτιο παίξιμο, όσο και στην χημεία. Ειδικά στα σημεία που μπλέκονται τα solos διακρίνεις ότι το σχήμα είναι τρομερά δεμένο, με ιδέες επί των jams και κυρίως με ολοκληρωμένη άποψη επί του κλασικού prog.”

Η αρχική κούραση, που μπορεί στις πρώτες ακροάσεις να είναι μερικώς έκδηλη λόγω των σχοινοτενών συνθέσεων, καταρρίπτεται με τις πρώτες επαναλήψεις. Φρονώ ότι οι Βοστωνέζοι φιλοτέχνησαν το πιο ενδιαφέρον έργο τους, κοσμώντας μία ολόκληρη σκηνή. Αμφιβάλλω αν αυτός ο χώρος έχει να επιδείξει κάτι ποιοτικότερο φέτος!”

“Το Reflections of a Floating World φαντάζει ως η αρτιότερη στιγμή τους με τους επικούς του ήχους να μεταφέρουν τον ακροατή στην τροχιά ενός συναρπαστικού ταξιδιού. Οι αναφορές προς τα 70s είναι η μόνιμη πηγή έμπνευσης της μπάντας που πλέον εμπλουτίζεται από την αύρα των late 60s, το post-rock και αναμφίβολα από τους Mastodon. Οι ανεπιτήδευτα μεγάλες συνθέσεις του δίσκου είναι το πεδίο όπου κολοσσιαία riffs στήνουν αδιανόητους δρόμους προς μακρινούς γαλαξίες κάνοντας έφοδο προς ανεξερεύνητους κόσμους.”

12. Threshold –  Legends of the Shires

 “…οι Threshold εξακολουθούν να κάνουν κάτι μόνο αν προσφέρει στο τραγούδι και όχι απλώς για να το βάλουν (είτε είναι θέμα, είτε σόλο ή οτιδήποτε), τα μεγαλύτερα σε διάρκεια τραγούδια που συνθέτουν ποτέ δεν σε κάνουν να αισθάνεσαι πως ακούς κάτι μακροσκελές, γράφουν «μεγάλα» ρεφραίν και πιασάρικες μελωδίες και διατηρούν αυτή την ικανότητα να επικοινωνούν με ανθρώπους που δεν είναι μουσικοί παρά την εξαιρετική τεχνική τους κατάρτιση.”

11. Alfa Mist – Antiphon

“Με το project Antiphon, o Βρετανός μουσικός και παραγωγός Alfa Mist προσθέτει τη δική του “φωνή”, δηλαδή άποψη, σε αυτό το πρόσφατο φρεσκάρισμα της jazz μουσικής, που πραγματοποιείται από καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Kamasi Washington και οι Yussef Kamaal. Στο άλμπουμ συνδυάζεται το mellow jazzy hip-hop σχολής Nujabes με τον ελεύθερο bebop αυτοσχεδιασμό. Με την εναρκτήρια δεκάλεπτη σύνθεση Keep On αποκαλύπτεται ένα πλήρες καλλιτεχνικό σύμπαν αστικής μελαγχολίας, ζεστών μελωδιών και ήπιου πειραματισμού. Η απλή δομή του hip-hop βρίσκεται στο παρασκήνιο, ενώ πρώτο ρόλο έχουν το τεχνικό και ευφάνταστο παίξιμο των πνευστών, της κιθάρας, των πλήκτρων και των κρουστών. Φυσικά, κυρίαρχο είναι ένα κλίμα εσωστρέφειας, η οποία όμως δεν αποκλείει τις κλιμακώσεις, όπως στο κομμάτι Errors.“

10. Pain Of Salvation – In The Passing Light of Day

“Στο In the Passing Light of Day συμβαίνει το εξής: όπως η απώλεια σκεπάζει το τελευταίο άλμπουμ του Nick Cave, όπως ο επερχόμενος θάνατος αγγίζει τον Bowie στο κύκνειο άσμα του, έτσι και το In the Passing Light of Day φορτίζεται συναισθηματικά από τις δικές του καταστάσεις και συναισθήματα. Πόνος, οργή, δημιουργία αλλά η διαφορά με τα προαναφερθέντα αριστουργήματα είναι ότι στο τέλος μέσα από έναν μαραθώνιο 71:46 λεπτών λεπτών επικρατεί η ειλικρινής ελπίδα. Αυτό από μόνο του πόσο υπέροχο είναι, ε;”

“Το In The Passing Light of Day ενώ είναι άμεσο, είναι αρκετά πιο progressive από τα Road Salt και αρκετά heavy. Τα φωνητικά του Daniel είναι εξαιρετικά ως συνήθως όπως και αρκετά από τα riffs τα οποία στα πιο heavy κομμάτια φτάνουν μέχρι και το djent… μπορεί να μην είναι από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ των Σουηδών, αλλά είναι μια πολύ καλή επιστροφή στη δισκογραφία που θα αφήσει ικανοποιημένους τους περισσότερους φίλους της μπάντας.”

09. Yolk – Solar

“…οι Yolk που συνεχίζουν με κεκτημένη ταχύτητα πιάνοντας από εκεί που μας άφησαν με το περσινό You Decide. Κατάφεραν να ανακεφαλαιώσουν έναν κύκλο που άργησαν να κλείσουν, επανακτώντας την διάθεση και το μεράκι τους. Το ταλέντο τους ούτως ή άλλως είναι αδιαμφισβήτητο. Έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια μπάντα που βρίσκεται από καταβολής της εν κινήσει τουλάχιστον στον τομέα των ζωντανών εμφανίσεων, πάντα ανήσυχη και σε ετοιμότητα να εντάσσει νέες μορφές έκφρασης μέσα στα πλαίσια του προοδευτικού rock.”

“Οι μελωδίες και τα θέματα διαδέχονται το ένα το άλλο με αξιοζήλευτη ροή που συμπαρασύρει τον ακροατή σε ένα avant-prog πανηγύρι με RIO βάση, έντονο πομπώδες zeuhl πνεύμα και το ιδιότυπο ψυχεδελικό στοιχείο των Yolk που κάνει το μείγμα μοναδικό. Ο ρυθμός είναι ο κύριος οδηγός και ο καταλύτης, αλλά όχι τόσο με τη συνηθισμένη αυστηρότητά του εντός RIO, όσο μέσω ενός ακατανίκητου groove που αξίζει να βιώσουν όλοι.”

08. Soft Power – In A Brown Study

“Οι ψυχεδελικές ημέρες του Σαν Φρανσίσκο των ’60s παρουσιάζονται σε απόλυτη συμπόρευση με την εξωτική, σχεδόν απόκοσμη γραφή του Bo Hansson. Η ονειρική jazz-folk των Ragnarök του πρώτου εκείνου αριστουργηματικού LP τους πίσω στο 1976, συσχετίζεται ευφορικά με την προοδευτικότητα της jazz μαεστρίας των Wigwam του Pekka Pohjola και της παρέας του. Σκέψεις, ιδέες και επιδιώξεις που καταλήγουν να ηχούν τις περισσότερες φορές υπό την αβίαστη και πηγαία εμφάνιση εκπλήξεων.”

“Ό,τι ωραίο μπορείτε να σκεφτείτε από τον Βορρά τα τελευταία σαράντα χρόνια είναι εδώ μέσα. Από τους Wigwam, Parson Sound και μπόλικη Can επιρροή, μέχρι τους Dungen. Βασικά δεν είναι δύσκολο να πούμε ότι η βάση είναι ο συνδυασμός της jazz με την  ψυχεδελική σκηνή στα τέλη ‘60s με αρχές ‘70s. Πολύ ευχάριστη έκπληξη το In A Brown Study, για ακροατές με εμπειρία και επιθυμία στις acid διαδρομές θα είναι μια απόλαυση.”

07. Enslaved – E

“Οι Enslaved τιμούν τις ρίζες τους αλλά παράλληλα νιώθεις ότι αποσυνδέοονται μερικώς από την μαυρίλα του παρελθόντος και το κάνουν με πολλή χάρη και στυλ που κάποιες μπάντες θα ζήλευαν. Και τελικά είναι η μπάντα που συνδυάζει το progressive με τον ακραίο ήχο ίσως καλύτερα από όλους τους υπόλοιπους. Οχι δεν υπάρχει κακό ή μέτριο κομμάτι στον δίσκο, δεν υπάρχει filler και θα μπορούσε για αρκετούς να μπει στα κορυφαία albums της χρονιάς. Ένα είναι σίγουρο: είναι η καλύτερη κυκλοφορία τους από το Axioma με το ενδιαφέρον, την όρεξη και την μουσικότητά τους να παραμένουν στα ύψη.“

“Οι φετινοί  Εnslaved πλέουν με το ανακαινισμένο τους drakkar σε βαθιά νερά με την απαράμιλλη τόλμη των προγόνων τους για να μεταφέρουν με ασφάλεια ένα δίσκο που μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί ως πιο προοδευτικός της καριέρας και η κορύφωση του στυλ που έχουν υιοθετήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια. Το Ε κινείται αριστοτεχνικά ανάμεσα στο metal και το προοδευτικό ροκ με τις  folk μελωδίες και τα jazz σημεία να αναδύονται σαν λουλούδια σπάνιας ομορφιάς πάνω σε αυτό τον ογκόλιθο.”

06. Leprous – Malina

“Το Malina είναι ένας δίσκος με ποικιλία αλλά μεγάλη συνεκτικότητα, που ακούγεται ενιαία και αναπόσπαστα λες και κάθε τραγούδι είναι και ένα διαφορετικό κεφάλαιο ενός βιβλίου. Μια κυκλοφορία που παρότι σε αρκετά σημεία είναι γεγονός ότι δεν πήγε πολλά βήματα παραπέρα συνθετικά πήγε σίγουρα μπροστά ηχητικά, ενώ σε άλλα έδειξε ένα διαφορετικό πρόσωπο του σχήματος που δεν περιμέναμε να το δούμε, διατηρώντας τα στοιχεία τους και τον προσωπικό τους ήχο.”

“Eξαιρετική επιστροφή από τους Νορβηγούς, οι οποίοι, αφού στις προηγούμενες δύο δουλειές τους πειραματίστηκαν με μεγάλες αλλαγές στον αρχικό τους ήχο, εδώ φαίνεται να βρίσκουν την σχεδόν τέλεια ισορροπία. Muse, Radiohead και Mastodon χωράνε όλοι σε αυτή τη δυναμική δουλειά με περίσσιο χαρακτήρα. Αν αυτή είναι η light πλευρά τους, θέλουμε κι άλλο.”

“Αισθητές αδυναμίες στο Ιn Contact δεν υπάρχουν, οι όποιες αναφορές στην υπάρχουσα δισκογραφία της μπάντας. πί συνόλω, το In Contactαποτελεί μια ώριμη δήλωση του σχήματος πως πρέπει να θεωρούνται ως μια από τις λίγες αιχμές των δοράτων του προοδευτικού μεταλλικού χώρου. Μέχρι το σύνολο των ακροατών μπορέσει να εμπεδώσει τη βαρύτητα του παρόντος πονήματος, εκείνο θα φιγουράρει άνετα στην κορυφή της λίστας των προτιμήσεων μου.”

“Κλασικές prog metal, djent και alternative επιρροές αναμειγνύονται ομοιογενώς. Τεχνική κατάρτιση και τραγουδοποιία ισορροπούν τέλεια εδώ, πράγμα που είναι ζητούμενο για μια prog metal μπάντα, αλλά όπως ξέρουμε και το  πιο δύσκολο πράγμα να επιτευχθεί. 04. Mastodon – Emperor of Sand

“Το Emperor of Sand συνεχίζει το απίστευτο σερί καλών δίσκων που μας έχουν δώσει οι Mastodon και τους εγκαθιδρύει ως ένα application παραγωγής καλών κομματιών. Δεν πρόκειται να φέρει καινούργιους φίλους στη μπάντα, αλλά δεν θα απογοητεύσει σίγουρα κανέναν παλιό και σε βάθος χρόνου θα μπαίνει στη συζήτηση για το ποια είναι η καλύτερή τους κυκλοφορία.”

03. Nova Collective – The Further Side

“…ένα άνευ προηγουμένου μουσικό αποτύπωμα που βρίσκεται ακριβώς στο σημείο τομής των συναρτήσεων του prog και του fusion, χαρίζοντάς μας έξι ισάξιες μεταξύ τους συνθέσεις με αναμφίβολα σύγχρονη αισθητική και χωρίς κανένα στοιχείο αναχρονισμού. Πρόκειται για ένα πολλά υποσχόμενο σχήμα νέων ταλαντούχων μουσικών το οποίο φαίνεται ικανό μέσα από δισκογραφία ανάλογης ποιότητας και αισθητικής να δημιουργήσει το δικό του μουσικό status και να αποκτήσει ξεχωριστή θέση στη συνείδηση ακροατών υψηλών απαιτήσεων.”

02. Wobbler – From Silence to Somewhere

“Οι  Wobbler μας παρέδωσαν όχι απλά τον κορυφαίο τους δίσκο, αλλά και μία από τις prog κορυφές της δεκαετίας που διανύουμε. Από ότι φαίνεται η διεκδίκηση της φετινής πρωτιάς είναι καθαρά νορβηγική υπόθεση και δίκαια.”

“Ο ενθουσιασμός δε λείπει σε κανένα από τα 48 λεπτά του άλμπουμ, που απαρτίζεται από μεγαλειώδεις συνθέσεις και ρεσιτάλ συμφωνικού prog. Οι Wobbler βρίσκουν ισορροπία μεταξύ μελωδίας και δεξιοτεχνίας, χωρίς να πέφτουν στην παγίδα των περιττών αυτοσχεδιασμών, πραγματικά ένα άλμπουμ με αρχή και τέλος, από την ησυχία στην μουσική ολοκλήρωση και από εκεί στο τοπ-10 της φετινής prog: παλιγγενεσία μετά από Yes, Genesis και Änglagård. Ξεχωριστή στιγμή: Fermented Hours…”

01. Motorpsycho – The Tower

“Με το The Tower δημιούργησαν το αντίθετο ενός μουσικού πύργου της Βαβέλ. Στον πύργο των Motorpsycho όλες οι φυλές και τα είδη συνεννοούνται στην εντέλεια, παραδίδοντας ένα μουσικό μωσαϊκό που ο κάθε σοβαρός rock ακροατής οφείλει να ακούσει. Αποτελεί το καλύτερο τους πόνημα μετά το The Death Defying Unicorn κατά την άποψή μου. Η ωρίμανσή του στα αυτιά μας, πιθανότατα θα του δώσει τη θέση στην κορυφή της δισκογραφίας τους. 26 χρόνια μετά το ντεμπούτο τους ε…“

“Σε στιγμές τα riffs είναι βαρύτερα από ποτέ, ενώ οι εναλλαγές ρυθμών και διάθεσης κατά τη διάρκεια των τραγουδιών είναι συνεχείς, αποτέλεσμα των εντυπωσιακών αυτοσχεδιασμών. Στον περιπετειώδη κόσμο του The Tower,  o ήχος του φλάουτου και του mellotron μπορεί να ακολουθεί ή να έπεται ενός heavy riff, δημιουργώντας ήχους εξαιρετικής ομορφιάς. Πρόκειται για μία από τις καλύτερες μπάντες που υπάρχουν αυτή τη στιγμή εκεί έξω σε ένα άλμπουμ που θα αποτελέσει σημείο αναφοράς της μακρόχρονης ιστορίας τους. Ένα από τα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς.”
