Three years ago, five musicians, until then unknown to each other but with a common goal and the same love for music, formed the band we broke the weather. They five musicians are: Steve Muscari (bass, synthesizer), Andy Clark (drums, vocals), Kev Ditroia (guitar), Scott Wood (guitar, vocals, alto saxophone) and Nick Cusworth (vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, bass, clarinet, keyboards). Without knowing from the outset the musical direction they would follow, they found their common points, and each one drew on their different influences. All this was enriched by their humanitarian and ecological concerns on a lyrical level and resulted in their first album, consisting of 10 songs with a total duration of 57 minutes.

Probably the best prog debut of 2022

The band from Boston makes an introduction with the beautiful saxophone melodies on Through the Wall. The fact that they use both alto and tenor saxophone is impressive. The track flows delightfully with the jazzy guitar notes being lively and sharp. A beautiful keyboard solo will justify why this track was chosen as the album’s single.

we broke the weather manages to remind many things from the wider rock spectrum. For example, Rot King, These Old Bones and Niceberg will immediately and clearly bring to mind Thank you Scientist, Dear Hunter and Mars Volta, both musically and vocally.

The short instrumental wbtw seems to divide the album in two parts, while the flow is not broken, but enriched in the best way. Their admittedly beautiful, playful, alt-prog becomes more slow-paced and melodramatic on the superb Fire Season, with the guitar solo leaping straight out of the 70s.

We won’t find any long-winded improvisations on the record, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a lack of moments where the synergy of the instruments creates moments of magic, like in Bellwether and In Web. The mix of intense electricity and saxophone will bring to mind a version of King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, if they had been formed in a Boston college in the 90s. In addition, the lyrics are important for the band and their delivery at times has something of the art of storytelling, managing to create images and therefore emotions. One of their characteristics is dynamic contrasts. The bursts of electric guitar that end up being even noisy, while the next moment a calm passage completely changes everything.

There is no member of the band who does not have an active and important contribution to the quality of the album. Perhaps the drummer, Andy Clark, shines a little more, but at the same time I feel Ι have to mention Steve Muscari’s contribution on bass, the superb uplifting sax playing of Scott Wood and Nick Cusworth, and Steve Muscari’s keyboard touches. The epic, dramatic ten minutes of The Fog gives each member time to develop their skills and is the only piece with such a long instrumental part.

The last track, Frequency, is their most alternative song, but the band’s love for prog in its entirety can’t be hidden there either, they bring it to a more technical level as it evolves.

Straight from the American underground, we broke the weather released a fantastic album that, like our beloved Scandinavian prog sound has that unattainable charming perfection, we broke the weather in turn bring out that American immediacy.

The album has not been released by any label, but I am certain these nice guys will soon find a strong label to support them.

On the Bandcamp page of we broke the weather it is mentioned that the process of composing the songs of their first album lasted three years, without an agenda and with the members not knowing each other. Judging by the result, we broke the weather might in a parallel universe have been a very beloved family, since their debut album has a remarkable coherence and gives you the feeling that this is material that arose from an already mature band. The alt-rock vocal melodies (Rot King, These Old Bones) flirt with jazz-rock escalations (Bellwether, The Fog), creating a new prog rock proposal, which departs quite a bit from the modern cases of Thank You Scientist and The Dear Hunter. This happens mainly because the band tries to compose much more freely, without having pre-decided on the strict structures of the songs. With the result sounding adventurous, thankfully the Americans have largely managed to avoid the problem of the songs sounding like rough jams. This record came out of nowhere and has already impressed quite a few people. It is almost certain that if they maintain this enthusiasm, and some quality factors such as production and orchestration are improved, we will witness even greater things in the future.

Προ τριετίας, πέντε μουσικοί έως τότε άγνωστοι μεταξύ τους με κοινό γνώμονα την αγάπη τους για τη μουσική, δημιούργησαν τους we broke the weather. Πρόκειται για τους: Steve Muscari (μπάσο, συνθεσάιζερ), Andy Clark (ντραμς, φωνητικά), Kev Ditroia (κιθάρα), Scott Wood (κιθάρα, φωνητικά, alto σαξόφωνο) και Nick Cusworth (φωνητικά, tenor σαξόφωνο, φλάουτο, μπάσο, κλαρινέτο, πλήκτρα). Χωρίς να γνωρίζουν εξαρχής τη μουσική κατεύθυνση που θα ακολουθήσουν, βρήκαν τα κοινά τους σημεία, ενώ επιπρόσθετα κόμισε ο καθένας και τις διαφορετικές του επιρροές. Όλο αυτό εμπλουτίστηκε από τις ανθρωπιστικές και οικολογικές τους ανησυχίες σε στιχουργικό επίπεδο και προέκυψε το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ, που αποτελείται από 10 τραγούδια συνολικής διάρκειας 57 λεπτών.

Πιθανότατα το κορυφαίο prog ντεμπούτο του 2022

Η μπάντα από τη Βοστώνη μας συστήνεται με τις υπέροχες μελωδίες σαξοφώνου στο Through the Wall. Εντυπωσιακό το γεγονός ότι χρησιμοποιούν alto και tenor σαξόφωνο. Το κομμάτι ρέει απολαυστικά με τις νότες της jazzy κιθάρας να είναι ζωηρές και αιχμηρές. Ένα όμορφο σόλο των πλήκτρων θα δικαιολογήσει το λόγο που επιλέχθηκε το εν λόγω κομμάτι ως single του album.

Οι we broke the weather καταφέρνουν να θυμίζουν πολλά πράγματα από το ευρύτερο rock φάσμα. Για παράδειγμα, τα Rot King, These Old Bones και Niceberg θα φέρουν στο μυαλό άμεσα και ξεκάθαρα τους Thank you Scientist, Dear Hunter και Mars Volta σε μουσικό και φωνητικό επίπεδο.

Το μικρό instrumental wbtw φαίνεται να χωρίζει το album στα δύο, με τη ροή όμως να μη διασπάται αλλά να εμπλουτίζεται με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. Το ομολογουμένως όμορφο, σκερτσόζικο, alt-prog τους γίνεται περισσότερο αργόσυρτο και μελοδραματικό στο κορυφαίο Fire Season, με το σόλο της κιθάρας να έχει ξεπηδήσει μέσα από τα 70s.

Στον δίσκο δεν θα συναντήσουμε μακρόσυρτους αυτοσχεδιασμούς, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι λείπουν οι στιγμές όπου η συνέργεια των οργάνων δημιουργεί μικρές στιγμές μαγείας, όπως στα Bellwether και In Web. Η μίξη έντονου ηλεκτρισμού και σαξόφωνου  θα φέρει στο μυαλό μια εκδοχή των King Crimson και των Van der Graaf Generator, αν αυτοί είχαν ανδρωθεί σε κάποιο κολλέγιο της Βοστώνης στα 90s. Συμπληρωματικά όμως, οι στίχοι είναι σημαντικοί για την μπάντα και η εκφορά τους κάποιες στιγμές έχει κάτι από την τέχνη του storytelling, καταφέρνοντας να δημιουργούν εικόνες οπότε και συναισθήματα. Ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά τους είναι οι δυναμικές αντιθέσεις. Τα ξεσπάσματα της ηλεκτρικής κιθάρας που καταλήγουν να είναι έως και «φασαριόζικα», ενώ την επόμενη στιγμή ένα ήρεμο πέρασμα αλλάζει τελείως τα πάντα.

Δεν υπάρχει κάποιο μέλος της μπάντας που δεν έχει ενεργή και σημαντική συνεισφορά στην ποιότητα του album. Ίσως ο ντράμερ, Andy Clark, λάμπει λίγο περισσότερο, αλλά την ίδια στιγμή νοιώθω ότι αδικώ τη συνεισφορά του Steve Muscari στο μπάσο, το αδιανόητο ξεσηκωτικό παίξιμο των Scott Wood και Nick Cusworth στο σαξόφωνο και τις πινελιές των πλήκτρων από τον Steve Muscari. Το επικό, δραματικό δεκάλεπτο του The Fog είναι αυτό που δίνει χρόνο σε κάθε μέλος να αναπτύξει τις ικανότητές του και είναι το μοναδικό κομμάτι με τόσο μεγάλο ορχηστρικό μέρος.

Το Frequency που κλείνει το άλμπουμ είναι το πιο alternative τραγούδι τους, αλλά επειδή η αγάπη για το prog στην ολότητά του δεν μπορεί να κρυφτεί ούτε εκεί, το φέρνουν σε ένα πιο τεχνικό επίπεδο καθώς εξελίσσεται.

Απευθείας από το αμερικάνικο underground, οι we broke the weather κυκλοφόρησαν ένα φανταστικό άλμπουμ που όπως ο Σκανδιναβικός prog ήχος που τόσο αγαπάμε έχει ως ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά του την απρόσιτη γοητευτική τελειότητα, οι we broke the weather με τη σειρά τους βγάζουν αυτή την Αμερικάνικη αμεσότητα.

Το album δεν έχει κυκλοφορήσει από κάποια εταιρεία, αλλά δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ την πιθανότητα αυτοί εδώ οι ωραίοι τύποι να μην βρουν το συντομότερο δυνατό ένα δυνατό label να τους υποστηρίξει.

Στην Bandcamp σελίδα των we broke the weather αναγράφεται πως η διαδικασία σύνθεσης των τραγουδιών του πρώτου τους δίσκου διήρκησε τρία χρόνια, με την διαδικασία να στερείται ατζέντας και με τα μέλη να μην γνωρίζονται μεταξύ τους. Κρίνοντας από το αποτέλεσμα, οι we broke the weather ίσως σε ένα παράλληλο σύμπαν να ήταν μια πολύ αγαπημένη οικογένεια, αφού το ντεμπούτο που κυκλοφόρησαν φέτος έχει αξιοπρόσεκτη συνοχή και σου δίνει την αίσθηση πως πρόκειται για υλικό που προέκυψε από ένα ήδη φτασμένο σχήμα. Οι alt-rock φωνητικές μελωδίες (Rot King, These Old Bones) ερωτοτροπούν με jazz-rock κλιμακώσεις (Bellwether, The Fog), δημιουργώντας μια νέα prog rock πρόταση, που ξεφεύγει αρκετά από τις μοντέρνες περιπτώσεις των Thank You Scientist και Dear Hunter. Αυτό συμβαίνει κυρίως γιατί το group προσπαθεί να συνθέσει αρκετά πιο ελεύθερα από τις αναφερθέντες περιπτώσεις, χωρίς να έχει προαποφασίσει για τις αυστηρές δομές των τραγουδιών. Με το αποτέλεσμα να ακούγεται περιπετειώδες, ευτυχώς οι Αμερικανοί έχουν καταφέρει σε τεράστιο βαθμό να έχει αποφευχθεί το πρόβλημα οι συνθέσεις να ακούγονται σαν άγαρμπα τζαμαρίσματα. Ένας δίσκος που ήρθε από το πουθενά και έχει κερδίσει αρκετό κόσμο στην πρώτη αυτή προσπάθεια. Είναι σχεδόν βέβαιο ότι εάν διατηρηθεί ο ενθουσιασμός και βελτιωθούν κάποιοι ποιοτικοί παράγοντες όπως η παραγωγή και η ενορχήστρωση, θα δούμε ακόμα πιο μεγάλα πράγματα.
