Birth – Birth [EP]

Birth was formed by Brian Ellis (Astra, Psicomagia, Free Festival). Conor Riley (keyboards, acoustic guitar, vocals) is also a member of Astra, while Trevor Mast (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums, guest) had participated in the line-up of Psicomagia’s sole album till this day. Birth’s self-tilted EP consists of three tracks and functions in essence as their first demo recording. They themselves describe their music as vibrant progressive rock, cinematically pompous, with psychedelic intensity. The question that arises is whether this new effort will be able to act as a counterweight to the absence of the great Astra from discography since 2012.

70s vintage delight

The truth is that the first sample of Birth immediately brings to mind Astra, without though sounding as a direct continuation of The Black Chord. A similarity is that here too everything has that wonderful vintage air, maybe too much. Probably the weak production (it’s a demo in essence, the band has recently signed to Bad Omen Records) played a role in that.

Of course, the band’s choice to be inspired directly from the 70s without using intermediate stations of influence, takes the listener on a journey to the best sounds of that time. Their progressive rock, if it does not completely reject the symphonic sound, avoids the polished versions of the genre. The space and psychedelic air – as they themselves state – run through all the compositions, culminating in Cosmic Wind – an accurate description by the way. Besides, the three tracks (especially the opener, Descending Us) are quite heavy, and that originates initially through their own sound, but mainly due to the musicians’ willingness to play intensely.

A great asset of Birth is the convincing narrative with which their pieces flow. The playing, as mentioned above, is very intense and is not based on the given technical perfection of the musicians, but more on their passion. This is a key element that sets the EP apart from the numerous “sterile” releases in the modern progressive rock scene. Special mention should be made of Ellis’ lead guitar playing that sounds as if it came from bands like Frumpy. The aforementioned narrative also stems from the vocals, since although Riley is not the definition of a great singer, he has written some excellent vocal melodies.

From the first demo recordings, Birth show that they are capable of great things. The talent of the musicians is non-negotiable. Hence, we as listeners can only wait for them to fully present their vision to us, under a more professional production.

2^nd opinion

For vintage prog lovers, especially for fans of Astra and  Psicomagia, this work came as a big surprise. The guys continue the path carved on the first two Astra albums. The 70s psych/prog direction and orientation are pretty obvious since the first tones of  Descending Us. Thick guitars are colliding with decent licks and patterns, an incredible amount of Mellotron waves, and it’s all enhanced by the very charismatic vocals of Conor Riley. This band knows what it is doing, working with contrasts, textures, and varying moods fluidly. Their unique harmonious style combined with a full-on devotion to rhythmic transcendence will not only leave you impressed but yearning for more after listening to twenty-two minutes of music presented on this EP. You could say that it’s a mix of Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Yes maybe, but it’s not just that. Birth try to find bits of the classics that worked, and then incorporate them into their  music. There is a lot of potential and plenty of interesting ideas and I am looking forward to their next step.

Οι Birth δημιουργήθηκαν με βασικό συνεκτικό κρίκο των μελών τους τον πολυπράγμονα Brian Ellis (Astra, Psicomagia, Free Festival). Από το στρατόπεδο των Astra συμμετέχει ο Conor Riley (πλήκτρα, ακουστική κιθάρα, φωνητικά), ενώ από το line-up του μοναδικού δίσκου των Psicomagia, συμμετέχει ο Trevor Mast (μπάσο) ως κανονικό μέλος και ο Paul Marrone (ντραμς) ως guest. Το ομώνυμο EP αποτελείται από τρία κομμάτια και λειτουργεί στην ουσία ως η πρώτη τους demo ηχογράφηση.  Οι ίδιοι περιγράφουν την μουσική τους ως δονούμενο progressive rock, κινηματογραφικά πομπώδες, με ψυχεδελική ένταση. Το ερώτημα που προκύπτει είναι το αν θα μπορέσει αυτή η νέα προσπάθεια να λειτουργήσει  ως αντίβαρο στην μεγάλη δισκογραφική απουσία των σπουδαίων Astra.

70s vintage πανσπερμία

Η αλήθεια είναι πως το πρώτο μουσικό δείγμα των Birth φέρνει αμέσως στο μυαλό τους Astra χωρίς όμως να ακούγεται ως η άμεση συνέχεια του The Black Chord. Μια ομοιότητα είναι πως και εδώ τα πάντα ευωδιάζουν από έναν υπέροχο vintage αέρα, ίσως και υπέρ το δέον. Πιθανόν η εμφανέστατα πρόχειρη παραγωγή (πρόκειται για demo στην ουσία, η μπάντα πρόσφτα υπέγραψε με την Bad Omen Records) να έπαιξε ρόλο σ’ αυτό.

Φυσικά και η επιλογή της μπάντας να εμπνευστεί κατ’ ευθείαν από τα 70s χωρίς να χρησιμοποιήσει ενδιάμεσους σταθμούς επιρροής, ταξιδεύει τον ακροατή σε ένα ταξίδι από τους καλύτερους ήχους της εποχής. Το progressive rock τους, αν δεν αποκηρύσσει πλήρως το συμφωνικό πρόσημο, αποφεύγει τις γυαλισμένες εκφάνσεις του είδους. Ο space και ψυχεδελικός αέρας – όπως και οι ίδιοι ευαγγελίζονται – διατρέχει το σύνολο των συνθέσεων, με αποκορύφωμα το – όνομα και πράγμα – Cosmic Wind. Εκτός αυτού τα τρία κομμάτια (με αποκορύφωμα το εναρκτήριο Descending Us)  είναι αρκετά heavy, μια σκληράδα που πηγάζει αρχικά από τον ίδιο τον ήχο τους, αλλά κυρίως από τη διάθεση των μουσικών να παίξουν έντονα.

Ένα μεγάλο ατού των Birth είναι η πειστική αφηγηματικότητα με την οποία ρέουν τα κομμάτια τους. Τα παιξίματα, όπως προαναφέραμε, είναι πολύ έντονα και δεν βασίζονται στην δεδομένη τεχνική αρτιότητα των μουσικών, αλλά πιο πολύ στο πάθος τους. Αυτό είναι και ένα βασικό στοιχείο που ξεχωρίζει το EP από την πλειάδα αποστειρωμένων κυκλοφοριών που συναντά κανείς στη σύγχρονη progressive rock σκηνή. Ιδιαίτερη μνεία πρέπει να γίνει στα lead κιθαριστικά παιξίματα του Ellis που μοιάζουν βγαλμένα μέσα από μπάντες όπως οι Frumpy. Η προαναφερθείσα αφηγηματικότητα πηγάζει και από τα φωνητικά, αφού παρόλο που ο Riley δεν είναι ο ορισμός της φωνάρας, έχει γράψει μερικές εξαιρετικές φωνητικές μελωδίες.

Από τις πρώτες demo στιγμές τους οι Birth δείχνουν ότι θα κάνουν κάτι πολύ καλό. Το ταλέντο των μουσικών είναι αδιαπραγμάτευτο. Συνεπώς, ως ακροατές δεν έχουμε παρά να περιμένουμε να μας παρουσιάσουν πλήρως το όραμά τους, υπό τη σκέπη μια πιο επαγγελματικής παραγωγής.

Για τους λάτρεις του vintage prog, ειδικά για τους λάτρεις των Astra και Psicomagia, αυτό το EP ήταν μια μεγάλη έκπληξη. Oι Βirth συνεχίζουν το μονοπάτι που χαράχτηκε στα δύο πρώτα άλμπουμ των Astra. Η κατεύθυνση και ο προσανατολισμός του psych/prog των 70s είναι αρκετά προφανή από τους πρώτους ήχους του Descending Us. Οι ογκώδεις κιθάρες συγκρούονται με αξιοπρεπή licks και μοτίβα, απίστευτο αριθμό κυμάτων Mellotron και όλα ενισχύονται από τα πολύ χαρισματικά φωνητικά του Conor Riley. Αυτή η μπάντα γνωρίζει τι κάνει, δουλεύοντας με αντιθέσεις, υφές και ποικίλες διαθέσεις. Το μοναδικό αρμονικό στυλ τους σε συνδυασμό με την αφοσίωση στη ρυθμική υπέρβαση όχι μόνο θα σας αφήσουν εντυπωσιασμένους, αλλά θα σας κάνουν να περιμένετε περισσότερα αφού ακούσετε τα 22 λεπτά μουσικής που παρουσιάζονται σε αυτό το EP. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι είναι ένα μείγμα Pink Floyd, King Crimson και Yes ίσως, αλλά δεν είναι απλά έτσι. Οι Birth προσπαθούν να βρουν κομμάτια από τα κλασικά σχήματα που λειτούργησαν και στη συνέχεια τα ενσωματώνουν στη μουσική τους. Υπάρχουν πολλές δυνατότητες και πολλές ενδιαφέρουσες ιδέες και ανυπομονώ για το επόμενο βήμα τους.
