Fates Warning – Theories of Flight

The case of Fates Warning is so special that the American veterans do not fully fall anymore into any general conversation about prog metal, the modern or older music scene. For many years they have been imprinted in the consciousness of all (not only of their fans) as a separate ensemble that acts in parallel with each “today” without a trace of worship for the past. What makes them unique is probably this emotionally sincere, deep and direct thing in their music, this mystery that is both witty and yet simple in essence. This element always surprises us positively, far exceeding the level of expectation, adding other notes on the soundtrack of our lives.

Confirmation of greatness

Creating an album for many “veteran” musicians out there is a typical process. Little steps, 1 … 2 … 3 in a row so as to produce a final result which will give the listener a sense of satisfaction. In some cases-rare ones compared with the trash on the market- this sequence produces albums in which while it is clear that the band has followed a plan to compose the material, they remain extremely close to what we call “inspired.” These considerations are made after constantly listening to Theories of Flight by Fates Warning and the intense feeling I have is that these songs would fit much more in the post-Parallels era. Back then the young Fates were shaping progressive metal and created music without carrying the huge legacy that they have built until today. Theories of Flight is free, unforced, at no point trying to prove something, or push the listener to perceive something hidden. Every aspect of the eight compositions is visible and you just have to let it touch your soul.

The album is characterized here and there as “the most metal album of Fates in years.” Although I think that Fates never stopped playing metal, I must admit that the traditional timbre of their sound in the 3-4 albums that preceded this one, did not have the leading role. Leaving experimentation aside (as they had done in Darkness in a Different Light), in Theories of Flight Matheos hardens the guitars, adding several classic metal spins (White Flag, SOS, Like Stars Our Eyes Have Seen) approaching the concert aspect of Fates and the “songs that people like” without selling off his art. The repeating mid-tempo riffs that preface / interrupt / accompany the sweet vocal melodies and trademark sing along parts of Ray Alder, usually are those that motivate the audience to go wild, jump up and down, sing with all their soul (at least in Greece). The new album includes seven compositions and I bet that will fulfill this description, which is the greatest success of Fates from the 90s onwards.

Singling out the unique The Light and Shade of Things as one of the best compositions of their career (due to escalation, voice melody refrains, central riffs, lyrics, a solo passage somewhere in 1:25 that smelled of Gilmour and many other priceless emotional factors) it does not make sense to look for fillers or tops. With uniformity and harmony reminiscent of A Pleasant Shade of Gray, the songs alternate, dispelling any possibility of repetition or the listener’s fatigue. Original ideas, old ideas, rehash…. the whole sounds so well played and meaningful. Fates always give their best in every album without ever creating any second thought about their intentions as artists.

2^nd opinion 

Twelfth album for Fates Warning and although I expected something similar to their previous one, Theories of Flight left me quite speechless. It’s more metal and more technical (they were probably listening a lot to Perfect Symmetry when composing it), the production is in the style of Arch / Matheos and Darkness in a Different Light, i.e. modern and digital, with a Ray Alder straight of the ’90s. The tracks are all of the highest level, and Seven Stars, The Light and Shade of Things and The Ghosts of Home stand out. If there was a song like Still Remains, we would be talking about a monumental album! In my opinion it’s their best since A Pleasant Shade of Gray.

Η περίπτωση των Fates Warning είναι τόσο ιδιαίτερη που οι Αμερικανοί βετεράνοι δεν εμπίπτουν πλήρως πια σε καμία γενική κουβέντα για το prog metal, τη σύγχρονη ή παλιά μουσική σκηνή. Εδώ και πολλά χρόνια έχουν αποτυπωθεί στη συνείδηση όλων (όχι μόνο των οπαδών τους) ως ένα ξεχωριστό μουσικό σύνολο που δρα παράλληλα με το εκάστοτε «σήμερα» χωρίς ίχνος παρελθοντολαγνείας. Αυτό που ίσως τους ξεχωρίζει περισσότερο είναι αυτό το συναισθηματικά ειλικρινές, βαθύ και άμεσο στοιχείο, αυτό το μυστήριο που είναι συνάμα πνευματώδες αλλά κατ’ ουσίαν απλό. Το στοιχείο αυτό που πάντα μας εκπλήσσει θετικά, ξεπερνώντας κατά πολύ τον πήχη των προσδοκιών, προσθέτοντας κι άλλες νότες στο soundtrack της ζωής μας.   

Επιβεβαίωση μεγαλείου

Η δημιουργία ενός album για πολλούς “βετεράνους” μουσικούς εκεί έξω, είναι μια διαδικασία. Βηματάκια, 1… 2… 3 στη σειρά, έτσι ώστε να παραχθεί ένα τελικό αποτέλεσμα που θα αφήνει ικανοποίηση στον ακροατή. Σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις -σπάνιες σε σχέση με την σκαρταδούρα που κυκλοφορεί- αυτή η αλληλουχία παράγει δίσκους που ενώ είναι ξεκάθαρο ότι η μπάντα έχει ακολουθήσει ένα πλάνο, ένα εγχειρίδιο για να συνθέσει,  το υλικό παραμένει εξαιρετικά κοντά σε αυτό που λέμε «εμπνευσμένο». Οι σκέψεις αυτές οδηγούνται από την συνεχή ακρόαση του Theories of Flight των Fates Warning και την έντονη αίσθηση που έχω ότι τα τραγούδια θα ταίριαζαν πολύ περισσότερο να έχουν γραφτεί στην εποχή μετά το Parallels. Τότε που οι νεαροί Fates διαμόρφωναν το progressive metal και λειτουργούσαν χωρίς να έχουν στην πλάτη τους, την τεράστια παρακαταθήκη που δημιούργησαν μέχρι και σήμερα. Το Theories of Flight είναι ένα album ελεύθερο, αβίαστο, που σε κανένα του σημείο δεν προσπαθεί να αποδείξει κάτι, να πιέσει τον ακροατή να αντιληφθεί κάτι κρυμμένο. Κάθε πτυχή των οκτώ συνθέσεων είναι ορατή και απλά πρέπει να την αφήσεις να ακουμπήσει την ψυχή σου.

Η βασική αίσθηση τιτλοφορείται δεξιά και αριστερά ως «ο πιο metal δίσκος των Fates εδώ και χρόνια». Αν και θεωρώ ότι οι Fates δεν έπαψαν ποτέ να παίζουν metal, δεν μπορώ να μην παραδεχτώ ότι η παραδοσιακή χροιά του ήχου τους στους 3-4 δίσκους που προηγήθηκαν δεν είχε τον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο. Αφήνοντας τον πειραματισμό στην άκρη (όπως είχαν πράξει και στο στο Darkness in a Different Light album), στο Theories of Flight ο Matheos σκληραίνει τις κιθάρες, προσθέτοντας αρκετά κλασικά metal γυρίσματα (White Flag, SOS, Like Stars Our Eyes Have Seen) προσεγγίζοντας την συναυλιακή υπόσταση των Fates και τα “τραγούδια που γουστάρει ο λαός” χωρίς ταυτόχρονα να ξεπουλάει την τέχνη του. Τα επαναλαμβανόμενα mid-tempo riffs που προλογίζουν / διακόπτουν / συνοδεύουν τις γλυκές φωνητικές μελωδίες και τα trademark sing alongs του Ray Alder, συνήθως είναι αυτά που κινητοποιούν το κοινό να παραληρεί, να χοροπηδάει, να τραγουδάει με όλη του την ψυχή (τουλάχιστον στην Ελλάδα). Το νέο album περιλαμβάνει επτά συνθέσεις που ποντάρω το βιος μου ότι επιτυγχάνουν την παραπάνω περιγραφή  και αυτό συνιστά την μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία των Fates από τα 90s και μετά.

Ξεχωρίζοντας το ανεπανάληπτο The Light and Shade of Things ως μια από τις καλύτερες συνθέσεις της καριέρας τους (ελέω κλιμάκωσης, φωνητικής μελωδίας refrain, κεντρικού riff, στιχουργίας, ενός solo περάσματος κάπου στο 1:25 που μύρισε Gilmour και πολλών άλλων ανεκτίμητων συναισθηματικών παραγόντων) δεν έχει νόημα να αναζητήσουμε fillers ή κορυφές. Με ομοιομορφία και αρμονία που θυμίζει το A Pleasant Shade of Gray, τα τραγούδια εναλλάσσονται διαλύοντας κάθε πιθανότητα επαναληψημότητας και συνάμα κούρασης του ακροατή. Πρωτότυπες ιδέες, παλιές ιδέες, αναμασήματα…. δεν έχει πολύ μεγάλο νόημα να αναζητήσουμε την εντοπιότητα της έμπνευσης, όταν το σύνολο ακούγεται τόσο καλοπαιγμένο και μεστό από ψυχή. Και από πάντα, οι Fates καταθέτουν ψυχή σε κάθε δίσκο τους, χωρίς να δημιουργήσουν ποτέ οποιαδήποτε δεύτερη σκέψη για τις προθέσεις τους ως καλλιτέχνες.

Δωδέκατος δίσκος για τους Fates Warning και εκεί που περίμενα μία από το ίδια με το προηγούμενό τους, ξαφνικά εμφανίζεται το Theories of Flight που με άφησε με το στόμα ανοιχτό. Πιο μεταλλικό και τεχνικό, μάλλον όταν το συνέθεταν άκουγαν πολύ το Perfect Symmetry, με παραγωγή στο στυλ των Arch/Matheos και Darkness in a Different Light, δηλαδή μοντέρνα και ψηφιακή και ένας Ray Alder από τα ’90s. Τα κομμάτια είναι όλα υψηλότατου επιπέδου, με τα Seven Stars, The Light and Shade of Things και The Ghosts of Home να ξεχωρίζουν. Αν υπήρχε ένα Still Remains, θα μιλούσαμε για δίσκο μνημείο! Κατ’ εμέ ο καλύτερος δίσκος τους μετά το A Pleasant Shade of Gray.
