The Bluemoon Projects first introduced themselves with a promising demo back in 2015. Back then, they were essentially the solo one man project of Greek musician Kostis Filippopoulos.
Since then and after some unofficial home recordings, the whole project acquired the character of a regular band in 2020 with the addition of Leon on bass and guitars and Nikolas Nenedakis on drums and percussion. Kostis Filippopoulos has taken on vocals, guitars and keyboards on the band’s debut album Encounters under the moniker MoonLoop.

Fresh sound with a lot of memories
Encounters is a concept album that tells a sci fi story of someone who comes into contact with aliens and is given the opportunity to leave Earth and join them. With the idea of a single story, they want, as they say, to honor the tradition of prog / art-rock concept albums.
Sonar which opens the 42-minute album consisting of seven compositions is a beautiful atmospheric ambient composition. Devolution in its introduction and in the way the vocals are placed on top of the music reminded me of several modern prog bands such as The Pineapple Thief and Gazpacho. A second beautiful composition in a row, so the ten minutes of Alien Talking that follows is a challenge. The song builds gradually, with choral vocals at the beginning, melodic guitars and ubiquitous keyboards and synths. The guitar solos directly refer to the style and sound of David Gilmour. After all, Gilmour-era Pink Floyd and bands influenced by Floyd are the main influences in BlueMoon Project’s music. The same goes for Dress Like Me with the echo of the lyrics that are a direct reference to Floyd. This song also reminds something of the way Anathema embraced sound of Floyd in Alternative 4.
However, when the rhythm guitars become sharper, then Porcupine Tree’s influence is more evident. Even band leader Kostis Filippopoulos ‘ nickname MoonLoop is probably a reference to the song Moonloop from The Sky Moves Sideways.
The vocals are by no means exceptional, but on the other hand they are not bad either. I would rather say that Kostis is very careful, singing within his capabilities. There is a nasal tone on the high notes with the successful addition of some effects.
The mid part in Eden would make me swear I’m hearing references even to Greek artists like Last Dance / Dimitris Papaspyropoulos, but also works like Constantinos Beta’s excellent album 2. That is, influences from the alternative electronic sound based on the creation of atmosphere and nostalgic melodies. Such are the acoustic guitar melodies on T-minus before it evolves into an extroverted indie song. One of the most special and beautiful moments of the album.
Hypersleep, which completes the album, is a dreamy, hypnotic composition that will bring to mind the early recordings of Porcupine Tree, but also the aura of a Jeff Buckley.
The good thing about Encounters is that it flow nicely, without any weak part. All compositions have homogeneity and stand at a very good level. One could say that maybe the production could be sharper, that their influences are too obvious, but personally that whole lo-fi aesthetic wins me over with whatever romance it hides.

After several years as a demo solo project of Kostis Filippopoulos (MoonLoop), The Bluemoon Projects take the form of a three-member band and finally release their full-length debut album. The two new members add an orchestral depth to the final result, while the production -although not perfect – enhances the album’s compositions. The style directly refers to the first period of Porcupine Tree and of course Pink Floyd. The 90s alternative prog element gives a single stylistic stamp to The Bluemoon Projects’ music, which is also one of their main strengths. Creating an atmospheric trippy framework is one of the main purposes of the band, with a strong storytelling and songwriting. Although there is clearly room for improvement in the production and the technique, the main purpose of the album was achieved. The Bluemoon Projects now have official discography, reminding us of a great era, from which less and less musicians choose to draw their inspiration, unfortunately.

Οι Bluemoon Projects μας είχαν συστηθεί με ένα ελπιδοφόρο demo πίσω στο 2015. Τότε, ουσιαστικά ήταν το προσωπικό one man project του Έλληνα Κωστή Φιλιππόπουλου.
Από τότε και έπειτα από κάποιες ανεπίσημες ηχογραφήσεις σε επίπεδο home recording, το όλο project απέκτησε χαρακτήρα κανονικής μπάντας το 2020 με την ένταξη των Leon στο μπάσο και στις κιθάρες και του Νικόλα Νενεδάκη στα ντραμς και στα κρουστά. Ο Κωστής παραμένει στα φωνητικά, στις κιθάρες και στα πλήκτρα υπό το όνομα MoonLoop.

Φρέσκος ήχος με πολλές αναμνήσεις
Το Encounters αποτελεί ένα concept άλμπουμ που εξιστορεί μία sci fi ιστορία κάποιου που έρχεται σε επαφή με εξωγήινους και του δίδεται η ευκαιρία να εγκαταλείψει τη Γη, ώστε να πάει μαζί τους. Με την ιδέα της ενιαίας ιστορίας, θέλουν όπως λένε και οι ίδιοι, να τιμήσουν την παράδοση των concept άλμπουμ του prog / art-rock.
Το Sonar που ανοίγει το διάρκειας 42 λεπτών άλμπουμ που αποτελείται από επτά συνθέσεις είναι μία όμορφη ατμοσφαιρική ambient σύνθεση. Το Devolution στην εισαγωγή του αλλά και στον τρόπο που είναι τοποθετημένα πάνω στη μουσική τα φωνητικά μου θύμισαν αρκετά συγκροτήματα του σύγχρονου prog όπως οι The Pineapple Thief, αλλά και οι Gazpacho. Δεύτερη όμορφη σύνθεση στη σειρά, οπότε το δεκάλεπτο Alien Talking που ακολουθεί αποτελεί μία πρόκληση. Το τραγούδι χτίζεται σταδιακά, με τα χορωδιακά φωνητικά στην αρχή, τις μελωδικές κιθάρες και τα πανταχού παρόντα πλήκτρα και synths. Τα solos της κιθάρας παραπέμπουν άμεσα στην τεχνοτροπία και στο ηχόχρωμα του David Gilmour. Άλλωστε οι Pink Floyd της εποχής Gilmour και μπάντες που έχουν επηρεαστεί από τους Floyd σκεπάζουν συνέχεια τη μουσική των BlueMoon Project. Όπως συμβαίνει στο Dress Like Me με τα echo των στίχων που επαναλαμβάνονται να παραπέμπει στους Floyd. Το συγκεκριμένο έχει και κάτι από τoν τρόπο που είχαν αγκαλιάσει τους Βρετανούς οι Anathema της εποχής του Alternative 4.
Όταν όμως οι ρυθμικές κιθάρες γίνονται περισσότερο αιχμηρές τότε είναι ολοφάνερη η μέγιστη επιρροή των Porcupine Tree. Ακόμα και το παρατσούκλι του ηγέτη της μπάντας Κωστή MoonLoop μάλλον αποτελεί αναφορά στο Moonloop από το The Sky Moves Sideways.
Τα φωνητικά σε καμία περίπτωση δεν μπορώ να πω ότι είναι εξαιρετικά, αλλά από την άλλη δεν είναι άσχημα. Περισσότερο θα έλεγα ότι είναι προσεγμενα ώστε να μην ξεφύγουν από τις συγκεκριμένες δυνατότητές του Κωστή. Έχουν έναν ένρινο τονισμό στις ψηλές νότες και κάποιες φορές υποβοηθούνται, εύστοχα ομολογουμένως, από κάποια effects.
Το μεσαίο μέρος του Eden θα με έκανε να ορκιστώ ότι βρίσκω ηχητικές αναφορές ακόμα και σε Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Last Dance / Dimitris Papaspyropoulos, αλλά και από δουλειές όπως το εξαιρετικό 2 του Κωνσταντίνου Βήτα. Επιρροές δηλαδή από τον εναλλακτικό ηλεκτρονικό ήχο που βασίζεται στη δημιουργία ατμόσφαιρας και νοσταλγικών μελωδιών. Τέτοιες είναι και οι μελωδίες της ακουστικής κιθάρας στο T–minus πριν εξελιχθεί σε ένα εξωστρεφές indie τραγούδι. Από τις πιο ιδιαίτερες και όμορφες στιγμές του άλμπουμ.
Το Hypersleep που ολοκληρώνει τον δίσκο είναι μία ονειρική, υπνωτική σύνθεση που θα φέρει στο μυαλό τις πρώιμες ηχογραφήσεις των Porcupine Tree αλλά και την αύρα ενός Jeff Buckley.
Τα θετικό στο Encounters είναι ότι οι ακροάσεις του κυλάνε όμορφα, χωρίς να υπάρχει κάποια κοιλιά. Όλες οι συνθέσεις έχουν ομοιογένεια και στέκουν σε ένα πολύ καλό επίπεδο. Κάποιος θα μπορούσε να γκρινιάξει ότι ίσως η παραγωγή θα μπορούσε να είναι ευκρινέστερη, ότι οι επιρροές τους είναι κραυγαλέες, αλλά όλη αυτή η lo-fi αισθητική που βγάζει το άλμπουμ προσωπικά με κερδίζει με τον όποιο ρομαντισμό κρύβει.

Μετά από αρκετά χρόνια ως demo solo project του Κωστή Φιλιππόπουλου (MoonLoop), οι The Bluemoon Projects παίρνουν την μορφή τριμελούς συγκροτήματος και κυκλοφορούν επιτέλους το ντεμπούτο full-length τους. Τα δύο νέα μέλη προσθέτουν ένα ενορχηστρωτικό βάθος στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα, ενώ και η παραγωγή – παρότι όχι τέλεια – ενισχύει τις συνθέσεις του δίσκου. Το ύφος παραπέμπει ευθέως στην πρώτη περίοδο των Porcupine Tree και μέσω αυτής, όπως είναι λογικό, και στους Pink Floyd. Το alternative prog 90s στοιχείο δίνει μια ενιαία υφολογική σφραγίδα στη μουσική των The Bluemoon Projects, κάτι που αποτελεί και ένα από τα κύρια ατού τους. Η δημιουργία ενός ατμοσφαιρικού trippy πλαισίου είναι ένας από τους βασικούς σκοπούς του συγκροτήματος, χωρίς όμως να παρατηρείται κάποια έκπτωση στην αφήγηση και την σύνθεση εκ μέρους τους. Παρότι υπάρχει ένα σαφές περιθώριο βελτίωσης στα production values, αλλά και στο εκτελεστικό κομμάτι, ο βασικός σκοπός του δίσκου επιτεύχθηκε. Οι The Bluemoon Projects είναι πλέον μέρος της δισκογραφίας, θυμίζοντας μας με την μουσική τους, μια υπέροχή εποχή, από την οποία δυστυχώς όλο και λιγότεροι μουσικοί επιλέγουν να αντλήσουν την έμπνευση τους.
