POEM – Skein Syndrome

POEM have made a dynamic come-back, seven years after the release of their first album The Great Secret Show, with Skein Syndrome. Since their formation in 2006, the expectations they created at each step were very high and it is not by luck that although their second album was delayed enough to be released, many were those to have been expecting it impatiently. This is of much greater value if we take into account that we are in an era of information overload and high accessibility, where people forget quickly and easily.

The official release from the Swedish ViciSolum Productions is therefore due for the 18^th March, while the band already live the dream, as it is on the road in their first European tour with Amorphis, Textures and Omnium Gatherum, making appearances in 38 cities! The recognition at home and abroad is surely something they deserve. After waiting for 7 years for Skein Syndrome, it was totally worth it.

Coloured skein of thoughts

The title of the album makes you wonder what this syndrome is that you had never heard of before (and rightly so, because it doesn’t exist), but the word “skein” in combination with the very successful artwork lead to some conclusions about the topics. Dark, with reflections on the “being” of modern man, the emotional emptiness and the decadence of society. Yet, listening to the album feels good, as it works in a redemptive way, I would say.

The album opens with Passive Observer, a song that the band chose to turn into a video-clip. Good sample for a preview, although the truth is that the tracks are quite different from each other with this particular one having power and melodic passages by which you get hooked. The second track, the powerful Fragments raises the adrenaline, while The End Justifies the Means is probably what most people would like. The love song of the album has an inspired composition and a superb interpretation. The part «the sky is not that grey» (we are keeping that) causes a shudder. Next is Bound Insanity, perhaps the best track for me. Rich with diverse parts, beautiful melodies which are developing and variations from major to minor or vice versa.

Generally, it is of great interest, but the next one, Weakness, is what I think stands out. Catchy choruses and rhythm that gets stuck in your head. The voice tears your soul apart and the drums beat you mercilessly. And basically the song is just what it says: it’s like falling in the river, as such is the feeling it leaves in the end. Next is Desire, which could possibly become the next hit of the band with backing vocalists giving it the necessary touch. The album closes with Remission of Breath, which is interesting mainly from the middle and over and which has several progressive elements.

The influences are many and numerous, from great and beloved bands of the genre such as Opeth, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Katatonia and Karnivool. What I think makes the recipe so successful is that they exactly embody so well the details of the music they  love and the artists they admire, that this comes naturally to their playing. Although we do not hear something original, the result is both so familiar and fresh that when combined with the high level of playing of the members, it makes the whole listening experience take off. Professionalism, tight executions and quality of interpretation are a characteristic of a truly impressive work in the field of domestic metal. The production is good, as it should, the rhythm section is amazing, the guitars sometimes robust and sometimes melodic and the vocals admittedly stand out…

POEM, without hiding their influences, win the bet of their compact assimilation in a wholly tight and rich in detail product. With the weight of the compositions falling in the high technical vocals of G. Procopiou, their range is more than enough to cover a wide range of brain and emotional moods.

Οι POEM επέστρεψαν δυναμικά, 7 χρόνια μετά την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου τους album “The Great Secret Show”, με το “Skein Syndrome”. Από το σχηματισμό τους το 2006 οι προσδοκίες που δημιουργούσαν σε κάθε τους βήμα ήταν υψηλότατες και δεν είναι τυχαίο πως αν και το δεύτερο album τους καθυστέρησε αρκετά να κυκλοφορήσει, είναι πολλοί εκείνοι που το περιμένουν ανυπόμονα. Αυτό αποκτά πολύ μεγαλύτερη αξία αν συνυπολογίσει κανείς πως βρισκόμαστε σε μία εποχή υπερπληροφόρησης και μεγάλης προσβασιμότητας, κατά την οποία οι άνθρωποι ξεχνούν γρήγορα και εύκολα.

Στις 18 Μαρτίου λοιπόν, αναμένεται η επίσημη κυκλοφορία του από τη Σουηδική ViciSolum Productions, ενώ η μπάντα ζει ήδη το όνειρο, καθώς βρίσκεται on the road στην πρώτη της Ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία με τους Amorphis, Textures και Omnium Gatherum, κάνοντας εμφανίσεις σε 38 πόλεις! Η αναγνώριση εντός και εκτός συνόρων σίγουρα τους αξίζει, όσο άξιζε και η αναμονή 7 ετών για το “Skein Syndrome”.

Ο τίτλος του δίσκου σε κάνει να αναρωτιέσαι για το τι είναι αυτό το σύνδρομο που δεν είχες ποτέ ακούσει (και δικαίως, γιατί δεν υπάρχει) όμως η λέξη «κουβάρι» σε συνδυασμό με το πολύ πετυχημένο artwork σε οδηγούν στο να βγάλεις κάποια συμπεράσματα για τη θεματολογία. Σκοτεινή, με προβληματισμούς για το είναι του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου, τη συναισθηματική κενότητα και την παρακμή της κοινωνίας. Κι όμως, ακούγοντας το δίσκο αισθάνεσαι καλά, καθώς λειτουργεί λυτρωτικά θα έλεγα.

Ο δίσκος ανοίγει με το “Passive Observer”, ένα κομμάτι που η μπάντα επέλεξε να το γυρίσει ως video-clip. Καλό δείγμα για μια πρώτη γεύση, αν και η αλήθεια είναι ότι τα κομμάτια διαφέρουν αρκετά μεταξύ τους με το συγκεκριμένο να έχει δυναμική και μελωδικά περάσματα στα οποία κολλάς. Το δεύτερο κομμάτι, το δυνατό “Fragments” ανεβάζει την αδρεναλίνη, ενώ το “The End Justifies The Means” είναι μάλλον αυτό που θα αρέσει στους περισσότερους. Το love song του δίσκου έχει εμπνευσμένη σύνθεση και φοβερή ερμηνεία. Το σημείο «the sky is not that grey» (το κρατάμε αυτό) σου προκαλεί μια ανατριχίλα. Σειρά έχει το Bound Insanity, ίσως το καλύτερο κομμάτι κατ’ εμέ. Πλούσιο, με ποικίλα μέρη, ωραίες μελωδίες που αναπτύσσονται και διακυμάνσεις από το μείζον στο έλασσον και αντίστροφα.

Γενικά έχει μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον, όμως το επόμενο, το “Weakness”, είναι αυτό που ξεχώρισα. Πιασάρικο ρεφρέν και ρυθμός που σου μένει. Η φωνή σού σκίζει τα σωθικά και τα drums σε χτυπάνε αλύπητα. Και βασικά το τραγούδι είναι αυτό ακριβώς που λέει: σαν να πέφτεις στο ποτάμι. Τέτοια αίσθηση αφήνει.  Σειρά έχει το “Desire”, το οποίο παίζει να γίνει το επόμενο hit-άκι του συγκροτήματος με τα δεύτερα φωνητικά να προσδίδουν την απαραίτητη πινελιά. Το album κλείνει με το “Remission Of Breath”, το οποίο αποκτά ενδιαφέρον κυρίως από τη μέση και πέρα και το οποίο έχει αρκετά προοδευτικά στοιχεία.

Οι επιρροές είναι πολλές, από σπουδαίες και αγαπημένες μπάντες του χώρου όπως Opeth, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Katatonia και Karnivool. Αυτό που νομίζω ότι κάνει τη συνταγή τόσο πετυχημένη είναι ότι ακριβώς ενσωματώνουν τόσο άρτια τα στοιχεία από τη μουσική που αγαπούν και τους καλλιτέχνες που θαυμάζουν, που αυτό βγαίνει αβίαστα στο παίξιμό τους. Αν και δεν ακούμε κάτι πρωτότυπο, το αποτέλεσμα είναι τόσο οικείο και φρέσκο που σε συνδυασμό με το υψηλού επιπέδου παίξιμο των μελών κάνει την όλη εμπειρία ακρόασης να απογειώνεται. Επαγγελματισμός, δεμένες εκτελέσεις και ποιότητα στην ερμηνεία δίνουν το στίγμα μιας πραγματικά εντυπωσιακής δουλειάς στο χώρο του εγχώριου metal. Η παραγωγή είναι καλή, όπως θα έπρεπε, το rhythm section εκπληκτικό, οι κιθάρες πότε στιβαρές και πότε μελωδικές και τα φωνητικά ομολογουμένως ξεχωρίζουν…

Οι Poem χωρίς να κρύβουν τις επιρροές τους, κερδίζουν το στοίχημα της συμπαγούς τους αφομοίωσης σε ένα άρτια δεμένο και πλούσιο στη λεπτομέρεια προϊόν. Με το βάρος των συνθέσεων να πέφτει στα υψηλής τεχνικής φωνητικά του Γ. Προκοπίου, το φάσμα τους φτάνει για να καλύψει ένα ευρύ πεδίο εγκεφαλικών και συναισθηματικών διαθέσεων.
