Hollow Earth – Out of Atlantis

Every year it is verified that the tendency for reapproaching the vintage progressive rock isn’t just an ephemeral one but an ongoing need for some bands to reminisce about an artistic era which isn’t gone, never to return. Ticking off the bands that did so within his year which will soon be over, Wobbler,  Magic Bus,  Agusa,  Soft Power,  Arabs in Aspic, Jordsjø, Discipline, Skog Under Jord are magnificent samples of this tendency for vintage progressive rock that made the suspicious, forward-looking fans to think twice. This new-founded Swedish trio, whose debut album we review here, can be added as well to the list above since their aim is to transplant the imperishable late 60s – early 70s prog / psych rock spirit into present.

An unexpected killer album

Propelled by the pseudoscientific concept of the Hollow Earth, they named their musical cabal as such. The band members are disciples of a mystic heresy, a fact that permeates the compositions of Out of Atlantis, metamorphosing the whole process into a delirious initiation. A precise bio is unavailable since their true identity is a close-guarded secret. The band consists of Cristobal Nemo (Vocals, guitar, organ), Don Pharaoh (bass, vocals) and Rod Handel (drums).

Their style draws on the top moments of British prog and psychedelic rock. It becomes plain from the get-go that the sound of the Swedes relies heavily on the very early, but also the early 70s Pink Floyd with the vocals of Nemo sounding like a haunted variation of Syd Barrett’s voice. Moreover, the great legacy of the Canterbury scene (and more precisely the earliest Caravan) as well as the primeval side of Deep Purple (Rod Evans era) have left their impact on the album. At the same time, a few dotted parts may recall some great bands of the early seventies, like Still Life and Spring.

The album consists of five admirable psychedelic prog tunes and an average one which takes nothing away from the overflowing quality of the album which kicks off ideally with the amazing psych / prog Electric Eden that features an imaginative Hammond organ whose role is crucial especially in the middle section of the song. The title-track is the pure instrumental moment of the album, a heavy/rock composition with jazzy dashes whose intro brings back the spirit of Terry Howells of Still Life. The Floyd-ish Incantation verifies the admirable development of the album while the sarcastic title of Ave Satanas or Tea-Time with Lucifer crashes into a 60s heavy reef where Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge and Deep Purple coexist. The peerless 17-minute epic Behind the Ivory Gate with its memorable organ melodies of Nemo is along with the starter the summit of the album. Riders on the Vapour Trail doesn’t hold a candle to the aforementioned compositions since it is an occult composition which the band should work a lot more and it is based on a banal riff that you get the feeling that you have listened to it tens of times but you fail to spot the exact influence. It should be stressed that on the entire album the guitars have a supportive role allowing the Hammond organ to be in the lead of the music of the Swedes.

It is impressive that Hollow Earth compose music as if they have many years of experience under their belt. At the same time, they seem to be fully aware that this kind of music has a meaning only if it is played with this old-fashioned, analogue and warm sound and also if you filter the horizons of your influences. The Swedes did well. A new-founded band that came literally from the leftfield and they don’t simply tickle our fancy but their album is one of the candidates for the gems of the year and compete with the rest summits of the progressive albums that came out in 2017.

Hollow Earth’s Out of Atlantis is an album where it becomes instantly plain that it is a quality one because anything you listen to in there is so familiar and so well-placed that attracts you irresistibly in its world. King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple and many more influences from the legendary 70s coexist in the magnificent compositions of the Swedes which emanate an intense vintage feeling but they possess a gorgeous character thanks to the impeccable playing and the chemistry. Especially when it is solo-time, you can tell that the band is tight as it gets, with solid ideas about jamming and well-rounded views on the vintage prog. Listening to Behind the Ivory Gate alone is enough to form an immediate, and possibly positive, view about Hollow Earth.

Κάθε χρόνο διαπιστώνεται ότι η επαναπροσέγγιση που επιχειρείται στο παλιακό progressive rock δεν αποτελεί μία εφήμερη τάση, αλλά μία επικαιρική ανάγκη ορισμένων συγκροτημάτων να αναπολήσουν καλλιτεχνικά μία εποχή που δεν έχει περάσει ανεπιστρεπτί. Ανασκοπώντας ονομαστικά τις μπάντες της χρονιάς που σε λίγες εβδομάδες μας αποχαιρετά, οι Wobbler, οι Magic Bus, οι Agusa, οι Soft Power, οι Arabs in Aspic, οι Jordsjø, οι Discipline, οι Skog Under Jord είναι μερικά εξαίρετα δείγματα vintage προοδευτικών τάσεων, των οποίων οι φετινές κυκλοφορίες διέσεισαν τους υποψιασμένους φιλοπρόοδους ακροατές. Το πρωτοεμφανιζόμενο σουηδικό trio, το παρθενικό album του οποίου και θα αξιολογήσουμε, μπορεί κάλλιστα να προστεθεί στην παραπάνω λίστα μιας και ως σκοπό έχουν να μεταφυτεύσουν το άφθαρτο late 60s – early 70s prog / psych rock πνεύμα στον παρόντα χρόνο.

Απρόσμενη δισκάρα

Οι Σουηδοί αφορμώμενοι από τις παραεπιστημονικές θεωρίες περί Κοίλης Γης, ονοματίζουν τη μουσική σέκτα τους ως Hollow Earth. Τα μέλη της μπάντας είναι μυημένα σε μία αίρεση μυστικιστικού χαρακτήρα γεγονός το οποίο διαπερνά τις συνθέσεις του Out of Atlantis, μετατρέποντας το όλο άκουσμα σε ένα ντελίριο μυσταγωγίας. Ακριβείς βιογραφικές συστάσεις δε μπορούν να δοθούν καθώς η μπάντα κρατά ως επτασφράγιστο μυστικό την πραγματική της ταυτότητα. Το συγκρότημα αποτελείται από τους: Cristobal Nemo (Vocals, guitar, organ), Don Pharaoh (bass, vocals) και Rod Handel (drums).

Ειδολογικά και υφολογικά αντλούν την υπόστασή τους από τις λαμπρότερες στιγμές του british prog και psychedelic rock. Αυτοί που ευθύς εξ αρχής φαίνεται πως έχουν στιγματίσει τον ήχο των Σουηδών είναι οι πολύ πρώιμοι αλλά και οι early 70s Pink Floyd, με τα φωνητικά του Nemo να ομοιάζουν σαν μια στοιχειωμένη παραλλαγή της φωνής του Syd Barrett. Επιπλέον, η σπουδαία κληρονομιά της σκηνής του Canterbury, και συγκεκριμένα οι πρωιμότερες στιγμές των Caravan, έχει αφήσει τα σημάδια της στο δίσκο, όπως και η αρχέγονη ψυχεδελική πλευρά των Deep Purple επί Rod Evans. Παράλληλα, σκόρπιες στιγμές του δίσκου δύναται να θυμίσουν σπουδαίες μπάντες των αρχών της δεκαετίας του ´70, όπως οι Still Life και οι Spring.

Το album αποτελείται από πέντε θαυμαστά ψυχεδελίζοντα prog άσματα και ένα μέτριο κομμάτι, το οποίο δεν υποσκάπτει διόλου την ξέχειλη ποιότητα του album. Ο δίσκος εκκινεί ιδανικά με το εκπληκτικό psych / prog Electric Eden, με το ευφάνταστο hammond organ να επιτελεί εξαιρετικά τον ρόλο του προσφέροντας μαγικές στιγμές, ειδικά στο μεσαίο τμήμα του κομματιού. Το ομότιτλο αποτελεί την καθαρά οργανική στιγμή του album, μία heavy prog με jazzy ψήγματα σύνθεση, με την εισαγωγή να επαναφέρει το πνεύμα του Terry Howells των Still Life. Το Floyd-ικό Incantation επιβεβαιώνει τη θαυμαστή εξέλιξη του δίσκου, ενώ ο σκωπτικός τίτλος του Ave Satanas or Tea–Time with Lucifer προσκρούει σε έναν 60s heavy psychedelic ύφαλο, όπου συνυφαίνονται οι Iron Butterfly, οι Vanilla Fudge και οι Deep Purple. Το ανεπανάληπτο 17λεπτο έπος ονόματι Behind the Ivory Gate με τις ευμνημόνευτες organ μελωδίες του Nemo αποτελεί, μαζί με την εναρκτήρια σύνθεση, την κορυφή του album. Το Riders on the Vapour Trail δε συγκρίνεται με καμμία από τις προαναφερόμενες συνθέσεις, καθώς πρόκειται για μία occult rock σύνθεση που μπορούσε να δουλευτεί αρκετά παραπάνω, ενώ αυτή βασίζεται σε ένα κοινότοπο riff που νιώθεις ότι το έχεις ακούσει δεκάδες φορές αλλά αδυνατείς να προσδιορίσεις την ακριβή επιρροή. Να υπογραμμιστεί ότι καθ´ όλη τη διάρκεια οι κιθάρες επιτελούν δευτερεύοντα ρόλο, ενώ το hammond organ συνιστά τον οδηγητικό μίτο της μουσικής των Σουηδών.

Το εντυπωσιακό είναι ότι οι Hollow Earth συνθέτουν μουσική σαν να κουβαλούν χρόνια εμπειρίας και επαγγελματικής δουλειάς, ενώ παράλληλα φαίνεται ότι έχουν πλήρη επίγνωση πως το εν λόγω είδος μπορεί να παιχτεί μόνο αν αποδοθεί με αυτό τον παλαιό, αναλογικό, ζεστό ήχο και μόνο αν φιλτράρεις τους ορίζοντες των επιρροών σου, κάτι που το καταφέρνουν θαυμάσια οι Σουηδοί. Μια νεοσύστατη μπάντα η οποία ξεπήδησε στην κυριολεξία από το πουθενά, δεν κερδίζει απλώς τις εντυπώσεις αλλά θέτει σοβαρή υποψηφιότητα ώστε να ο δίσκος της να αποτελέσει ένα από τα διαμάντια της χρονιάς και να συναγωνιστεί επάξια τις φετινές κορυφές του προοδευτικού ήχου.

Το Out of Atlantis των Hollow Earth είναι από τις περιπτώσεις που αντιλαμβάνεσαι άμεσα ότι πρόκειται για μια ποιοτική κυκλοφορία και αυτό αιτιολογείται διότι ό,τι ακούς εκεί μέσα είναι τόσο γνώριμο και τόσο καλοτοποθετημένο, που σε ελκύει έντονα στον κόσμο του. King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple και αρκετές ακόμα επιρροές από τα θρυλικά 70’s συνυπάρχουν στις υπέροχες συνθέσεις των Σουηδών, δοσμένες με τρόπο που ενώ παραπέμπουν έντονα σε ακόμα μια vintage κυκλοφορία, εντούτοις διαθέτουν εξαιρετικό χαρακτήρα που οφείλεται τόσο στο άρτιο παίξιμο, όσο και στην χημεία. Ειδικά στα σημεία που μπλέκονται τα solos διακρίνεις ότι το σχήμα είναι τρομερά δεμένο, με ιδέες επί των jams και κυρίως με ολοκληρωμένη άποψη επί του κλασικού prog. Και μόνο το Behind the Ivory Gate να ακούσετε, θα σχηματίσετε ακαριαία άποψη περί των Hollow Earth και πιθανότατα θα είναι και θετική.
