Soft Power – In A Brown Study

Five years after they were formed, the Finnish Soft Power finally released their first full length album via Huuru Osasto Records. Their music is a mixture of late 60s / early 70s rock and more precisely the pop / psych / prog / jazz / folk sound of the Scandinavian scene of that era. Something like a distillation of Träd, Gräs Och Stenar, Pärson Sound, Fläsket Brinner, Wigwam, Bo Hanson, Ragnarök, Can and many others. If anything, it sounds totally interesting, indeed. Since the blooming of vintage psych /prog in Scandinavia is a fact, the debut album of Soft Power draws our interest even more.

A diary of psychedelic euphoria

As genuine continuers of the musical past of their country and the entire Scandinavian Peninsula as a whole, the Finnish Soft Power indulge themselves in an interplay between sounds, images and aromas. The music of the quintet sounds like a softly (no pun intended!) vibrating universe where assorted styles coexist and communicate with each other, imprinted finally on the mind as a unified form of expression.

On In a Brown Study the band from Helsinki pulls off to maintain an admirable balance which picks up steam right off the bat. The psychedelic days of San Francisco of the 1960s are displayed in perfect harmony with the exotic, almost otherworldly songwriting of Bo Hansson. The dreamy jazz-folk of Ragnarök of their first sublime debut back in 1976 is combined euphorically with the progressiveness of jazz mastery of Pekka Pohjola’s Wigwam and his mates. It is astonishing how Soft Power put their influences in display and at the same time they sound so special and unique.

We’re off to a flying start with the funky rhythm of Aavaa # 1/ MF, where the quintet spawns an adorned melody with attractive basslines, uplifting percussion, idyllic wind instruments and magnificent touches from the guitar. The same goes afterwards, as if they are constantly practicing Zen, as if they are overcome by wide sensuality. It seems like they lose themselves in exoticism and well-being that fills their soul, mind and body with energy. Ääntä Wallista and Sisämetsä showcase the conclusions above. But the time has come for a more impulsive expressiveness to chip in when it is the turn of the riveting psych inferno of All In All, where the liberty of Amon Düül II and Pärson Sound are spliced together, but in such a way that the mishmash has an easy-to-remember -verging on the edge of pop- tone.

Despite the diversity and their improvisational disposition, the developments of Soft Power are far from eccentric and pretentiously experimental. These musicians know pretty much what they want and before they are carried away by their whims they have unleashed their fertile intentions with a steady train of thought. Thoughts, ideas and inspirations end up, most of the times, echoing through many and wondrous surprises that make their appearance naturally. This staggering parade of rhythms and melodies of Afterglow lingers on the mind well after the listening is over.

Right from the first listen, In A Brown Study brings the belief to the fore that there is plenty of good music in obscure places. Showing respect to the history and tradition of Scandinavian rock music, we spot splashes of folks elements (Mitä On Kätketty Meiltä), an intimate relationship with jazz (Aavaa, Ääntä Wallista), numerous dives in psychedelia (Sisämetsä), dragging acid piety (All in Αll), freak-out moments with space influences (Afterglow). The wind instruments tinge beautifully this futuristic version of the progressive sound, with the vocals adding a psych-pop dimension to the whole venture. Anything beautiful that comes to mind originating from the North is here to be found. From Wigwam, Pärson Sound and a healthy dose of Can influence to the great Dungen. Basically, it is no-brainer to say that the basis is the combination of jazz with the late-1960s / early-1970s psychedelic scene. In A Brown Study turned out to be a genuinely pleasant surprise, a guaranteed enjoyment for the seasoned listeners and those who long for acid journeys, as for the rest, it is a challenge for new adventures!

Πέντε χρόνια μετά την ίδρυσή τους, οι Φινλανδοί Soft Power κυκλοφόρησαν το πρώτο τους full-length album μέσω της Huuru Osasto Records. Η μουσική τους είναι ένα κράμα από late 60s / early 70s rock και ειδικότερα την pop / psych / prog / jazz / folk Σκανδιναβική σκηνή της εποχής εκείνης. Κάτι σαν ένα απόσταγμα των Träd, Gräs Och Stenar, Pärson Sound, Fläsket Brinner, Wigwam, Bo Hanson, Ragnarök, Can και πολλών άλλων. Αν μη τι άλλο, άκρως ενδιαφέρον, πράγματι. Με δεδομένη την άνθιση του vintage psych /prog στη Σκανδιναβία, το ντεμπούτο των Soft Power αναπόδραστα κεντρίζει την προσοχή μας.

Ημερολόγιο ψυχεδελικής ευφορίας

Ορμώμενοι από το ηχητικό παρελθόν της χώρας τους και ολόκληρης της Σκανδιναβικής χερσονήσου εν γένει, οι Φινλανδοί Soft Power επιδίδονται σε μια αλληλεπίδραση ήχων, εικόνων και μυρωδιών. Η μουσική του πενταμελούς σχήματος μοιάζει με ένα ήπια (soft power σου λέει…) παλλόμενο σύμπαν, στο οποίο συνυπάρχουν και επικοινωνούν αποτελεσματικά διαφορετικών εκφάνσεων τεχνοτροπίες, που εν τέλει σου εντυπώνονται σαν μία και αδιαίρετη μορφή έκφρασης.

Στο In A Brown Study το γκρουπ από το Ελσίνκι κατορθώνει να διατηρεί μια θαυμαστή ισορροπία, που όσο περνάει η ώρα αυτή γίνεται ολοένα και πιο συναρπαστική. Οι ψυχεδελικές ημέρες του Σαν Φρανσίσκο των ’60s παρουσιάζονται σε απόλυτη συμπόρευση με την εξωτική, σχεδόν απόκοσμη γραφή του Bo Hansson. Η ονειρική jazz-folk των Ragnarök του πρώτου εκείνου αριστουργηματικού LP τους πίσω στο 1976, συσχετίζεται ευφορικά με την προοδευτικότητα της jazz μαεστρίας των Wigwam του Pekka Pohjola και της παρέας του. Κι είναι απορίας άξιο το γεγονός ότι οι Soft Power εκδηλώνουν άμεσα τις αναφορές τους και συγχρόνως καταφέρνουν να ακούγονται τόσο ιδιαίτεροι και αυτοδύναμοι.

Αρχής γενομένης από τη funky ρυθμολογία του Aavaa # 1/ MF, το παρόν κουιντέτο φτιάχνει μια πλουμιστή μελωδικότητα, με ελκυστικές μπασογραμμές και ξεσηκωτικά κρουστά, ειδυλλιακά πνευστά και υπέροχες κιθαριστικές προσθήκες. Το συναντάς και παρακάτω το κάδρο που τους θέλει μονίμως σε μια κατάσταση ζεν, σαν να τους διακατέχει μια ευάερη αισθαντικότητα. Σαν να χάνονται σε μια εξωτικότητα και μια ευημερία που τους γεμίζει ψυχή, μυαλό και σώμα με ενέργεια. Τα Ääntä Wallista και Sisämetsä αποτελούν μια τρανή απόδειξη των παραπάνω συμπερασμάτων. Και κάπου εκεί χρονικά υπεισέρχεται και μια περισσότερο ορμητήρια εκφραστικότητα, στο καθηλωτικό psych παρανάλωμα του All In All, μια σύζευξη της ελευθεριότητας των Amon Düül II και των  Pärson Sound, μα με ένα τρόπο που προσδίδει στο μείγμα μια ευκολομνημόνευτη στα όρια της pop χροιά.

Παρά την όποια ποικιλομορφία τους και τον αυτοσχεδιαστικό τους χαρακτήρα, οι αναπτύξεις των Soft Power δεν ακούγονται στο ελάχιστο εκκεντρικές και εξεζητημένα πειραματικές. Το προκείμενο γκρουπ ανθρώπων καταφθάνει αρκετά κατασταλαγμένο και προτού αφεθεί στις παρορμήσεις του, απλώνει γόνιμα και με την παρουσία σταθερού ειρμού τις σκέψεις του. Σκέψεις, ιδέες και επιδιώξεις που καταλήγουν να ηχούν τις περισσότερες φορές υπό την αβίαστη και πηγαία εμφάνιση εκπλήξεων. Πολλών και όμορφων εκπλήξεων. Εκείνο το συγκλονιστικό γαϊτανάκι ρυθμών και μελωδιών του Afterglow δε λέει να εγκαταλείψει το μυαλό ακόμη και μετά την πάροδο της ακρόασής του.

To In A Brown Study από την πρώτη ακρόαση επαναφέρει την άποψη (μου), ότι υπάρχει ακόμα πολλή καλή, κρυμμένη μουσική. Με σεβασμό στην ιστορία και την παράδοση της Σκανδιναβικής μουσικής ιστορίας παρατηρούμε έντονα folk στοιχεία (Mitä On Kätketty Meiltä), μια ερωτική σχέση με την jazz (Aavaa, Ääntä Wallista), πολλές ψυχεδελικές βουτιές (Sisämetsä), αργές acid κατανύξεις (All in Αll), freak out καταστάσεις με space επιρροές (Afterglow). Τα πνευστά χρωματίζουν πανέμορφα αυτή την εκδοχή της αυριανής προοδευτικής σκηνής με τα φωνητικά να δίνουν μια πιο psych–pop διάσταση στο όλο εγχείρημα. Ό,τι ωραίο μπορείτε να σκεφτείτε από τον Βορρά τα τελευταία σαράντα χρόνια είναι εδώ μέσα. Από τους Wigwam, Parson Sound και μπόλικη Can επιρροή, μέχρι τους Dungen. Βασικά δεν είναι δύσκολο να πούμε ότι η βάση είναι ο συνδυασμός της jazz με την  ψυχεδελική σκηνή στα τέλη ‘60s με αρχές ‘70s. Πολύ ευχάριστη έκπληξη το In A Brown Study, για ακροατές με εμπειρία και επιθυμία στις acid διαδρομές θα είναι μια απόλαυση, για τους υπόλοιπους μια πρόκληση για νέες περιπέτειες!
