Phase – In Consequence [reissue]

The Larissa born Phase are an interesting case of a Greek band (even though their current base is the UK). They classify themselves in the post-punk revival movement, even though their music has elements from the wider indie and alternative rock genre, and many alt-prog influences. At the moment, they are creating their third full-length studio album. At the same time they found an opportunity to re-release their debut In Consequence that came out in 2010 and it relatively moved the waters in the alternative genre (The Wait followed in 2014). It’s worth noting, that they have share the stage with Anneke Van Giersbergen, Danny Cavanagh, Sivert Hoyem, Jeff Martin, The Twilight Sad and Antimatter (Duncan Patterson is featured in one of the songs of In Consequence). However, the most impressive entry to their CV is their live appearance in Syria, being the second international band to do so after Gorillaz.

West meets east or east meets west?

After a few full listens of In Consequence, the first thing that οne perceives is the certainness in which Phase have decrystallized their personal sound (something that is also true in The Wait). Their alternative rock is dark, with an intense eastern atmosphere, many progressive games, executed in a constant cold psychedelic background. Their influences are clear, but they are in no way undermining their personal sound. E.g. even the clear reference to The Tea Party (and ergo to Led Zeppelin) in the instrumental Evening On My Dark Hillside, isn’t annoying and it works as a break right in the middle of the album.

As mentioned above, their eastern scales play a big role in the music structure of Phase. This element exists in almost all of the tracks, either in their basic melody, or in the background orchestration and it is so characteristic that the album could be classified as eastern alternative rock. Even the psychedelic background of their sound is probably inspired hookah smoking more than anything else. The post-punk element that they are also preaching mostly appears in the sound of the bass guitar.

In Consequence has very good coherence and consistency, while all the tracks are interesting as units. The emphasis of the band in the songwriting is clear and it’s one of its strengths. The way in which their ideas are laid and interchange as well as the imaginative orchestral tricks, bring the level of the whole album up. An album that falls behind only in some parts. Firstly, the vocals, they are in no way annoying, but in an album that they have a leading role, they stay in the mind of the listener as extras. Secondly, the production could be better (something that is true, even more so, in The Wait) and it could mainly help the very rich orchestration to be the highlight in the ear of the audience.

By re-listening the debut album of Phase, and having in mind their second album, it’s clear that the band is ready to cross to the next stage. In a large degree hey hold the secrets of the sound that they chose to have and they seem to have a lot of inspiration so without a doubt we must wait and see what the future holds.

2^nd opinion

Of all the things that happen in the debut of Phase, one attribute is clear: the exchange between art and reality flows in an immediate way. The experiences, the worldview of the three band members that are within the lyrics are expressed through a musical dialect that first takes you with it and then it imprints one image after the other. A dialect that successfully grasps different branches of rock and much more, from the ‘70s until today. A rollercoaster of sounds, with main basis in progressive rock from 1995 and the  establishment of  Porcupine Tree, that as it evolves it presents a neo-prog inspired face that is combined with the events of the early ‘10s. Electric evacuations of controlled coarse noise are exchanged with soft acoustic passages and psychedelia leads as aesthetic, western and eastern idiosyncrasies in the melodies and the rhythms are finding a landing point, extroversion and introversion are used in a balanced and delicate way. In Consequence seems to follow the flow of time presenting more and more elements that are there to be noticed.

Οι Λαρισαίοι Phase αποτελούν μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα περίπτωση ελληνικής μπάντας (αν και πλέον η βάση τους είναι το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο). Οι ίδιοι κατατάσσουν τον εαυτό τους στο post-punk revival κίνημα, παρόλο που η μουσική τους εμπεριέχει στοιχεία από τον ευρύτερο indie και alternative rock χώρο, όπως και πολλές alt-prog αναφορές. Αυτή τη στιγμή βρίσκονται στη φάση της δημιουργίας του τρίτου τους full-length studio δίσκου. Παράλληλα βρήκαν την ευκαιρία να επανακυκλοφορήσουν το ντεμπούτο τους In Consequence το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το 2010 και έκανε μια σχετική αίσθηση στον alternative χώρο (το The Wait ακολούθησε το 2014). Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως έχουν μοιραστεί τη σκηνή με την Anneke Van Giersbergen, τoν Danny Cavanagh, τον Sivert Høyem, τον Jeff Martin, τους The Twilight Sad και τους Antimatter (ο Duncan Patterson συμμετέχει σε ένα κομμάτι του In Consequence). Παρόλα αυτά, το πιο εντυπωσιακό στοιχείο στο βιογραφικό τους είναι η εμφάνισή τους στη Συρία, όντας η δεύτερη διεθνής μπάντα μετά τους Gorillaz που εμφανίστηκε στην πολύπαθη αυτή χώρα.

Η δύση βρίσκει την ανατολή ή η ανατολή τη δύση;

Μετά από μερικές ολοκληρωμένες ακροάσεις του In Consequence, το πρώτο πράγμα που γίνεται αντιληπτό είναι η σιγουριά με την οποία έχουν αποκρυσταλλώσει οι Phase το προσωπικό τους ύφος (κάτι που συνέχισε να ισχύει και στο The Wait). Το alternative rock τους είναι σκοτεινό, με μια έντονη ανατολίτικη ατμόσφαιρα και πολλά progressive παιχνιδίσματα, εκτελεσμένο σε ένα μόνιμο ψυχρό ψυχεδελικό background. Οι επιρροές τους είναι μεν ξεκάθαρες, αλλά σε καμιά περίπτωση δεν υποσκάπτουν το προσωπικό τους στίγμα. Π.χ. ακόμα και η ξεκάθαρη αναφορά στους The Tea Party (και συνεπαγωγικά στους Led Zeppelin) στο instrumental Evening Οn Μy Dark Hillside, κάθε άλλο παρά ενοχλεί και λειτουργεί και καίρια ως ένα διάλειμμα ακριβώς στη μέση του δίσκου.

Όπως προαναφέρθηκε, οι ανατολικές κλίμακες παίζουν μεγάλο ρόλο στο μουσικό οικοδόμημα των Phase. Αυτό το στοιχείο υπάρχει σε σχεδόν όλα τα κομμάτια, είτε στη βασική τους μελωδία, είτε στο πίσω μέρος της ενορχήστρωσης και είναι τόσο χαρακτηριστικό που ο δίσκος θα μπορούσε να κατηγοριοποιηθεί εύκολα ως eastern alternative rock. Ακόμα και το ψυχεδελικό background του ήχου τους χρωστάει πιο πολλά σε ναργιλέδες παρά σε οτιδήποτε άλλο. Το post-punk στοιχείο που ευαγγελίζονται και οι ίδιοι, εμφανίζεται κυρίως στο ήχο αλλά και στο παίξιμο του μπάσου.

Το In Consequence έχει ως δίσκος μια πολύ καλή συνοχή και συνέπεια, ενώ όλα τα κομμάτια που περιέχει έχουν ενδιαφέρον. Η έμφαση της μπάντας στο songwriting είναι ξεκάθαρη και σίγουρα αποτελεί ένα από τα βασικά της ατού. Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο «στρώνονται» και εναλλάσσονται οι ιδέες τους και τα ευφάνταστα ενορχηστρωτικά τους κόλπα ανεβάζουν επίπεδο όλο το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Ένα τελικό αποτέλεσμα που πάσχει μόνο σε κάποια σημεία. Πρώτον στα φωνητικά, που σε καμία περίπτωση δεν ενοχλούν, αλλά σε ένα δίσκο που έχουν πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο, μένουν στο υποσυνείδητο του ακροατή ως κομπάρσοι. Δεύτερον η παραγωγή θα μπορούσε να είναι καλύτερη (κάτι που ισχύει, ίσως και παραπάνω, στο The Wait) και κυρίως να βοηθά την τόσο πλούσια ενορχήστρωση να αναδειχθεί πλήρως στο αυτί του ακροατή.

Ξανακούγοντας το ντεμπούτο των Phase και έχοντας στο μυαλό μας και το δεύτερό τους δίσκο, γίνεται ξεκάθαρο ότι η μπάντα είναι έτοιμη να περάσει στο επόμενο επίπεδο. Κατέχουν σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό τα μυστικά του ήχου που διάλεξαν να κινηθούν και δείχνουν να έχουν μαζεμένη πολύ έμπνευση, οπότε οφείλουμε να συντονιστούμε περιμένοντας τη συνέχεια.

Στα όσα συμβαίνουν στο ντεμπούτο των Phase, ένα χαρακτηριστικό είναι ευθέως ευδιάκριτο: η συνδιαλλαγή μεταξύ τέχνης και πραγματικότητας ρέει με άμεσο και πηγαίο τρόπο. Τα βιώματα και η κοσμο-οπτική των μελών του τριμελούς σχήματος που εσωκλείονται στους στίχους εκφέρονται μέσα από μια μουσική διάλεκτο που πρώτα σε παίρνει μαζί της και έπειτα σου εντυπώνει την μία εικόνα μετά την άλλη. Μια διάλεκτο που πιάνει με αποτελεσματικό τρόπο διάφορα παρακλάδια του rock και όχι μόνο, από τα ’70s μέχρι σήμερα. Ένα rollercoaster ήχων, με πρωταρχικές βάσεις στο προοδευτικό rock από το 1995 και την εγκαθίδρυση των Porcupine Tree κι έπειτα, που καθώς εξελίσσεται παρουσιάζει ένα εμπνευσμένο neo-prog πρόσωπο που συνάδει με τα τεκταινόμενα των αρχών των ’10s. Ηλεκτρικές εκκενώσεις ελεγχόμενου θορύβου με τραχύτητα εναλλάσσονται με απαλά ακουστικά περάσματα και η ψυχεδέλεια πρωτοστατεί ως αίσθηση, δυτικές και ανατολίτικες ιδιοσυγκρασίες στις μελωδίες και τους ρυθμούς βρίσκουν σημείο επαφής, εξωστρέφεια και εσωστρέφεια χρησιμοποιούνται ισορροπημένα και με λεπτότητα. Το In Consequence μοιάζει να διανύει το ρου του χρόνου παρουσιάζοντας όλο και περισσότερες πτυχές που μένουν να προσεχθούν.
