Möbius Strip – Möbius Strip

Möbius Strip is a new Italian progressive jazz-rock band, which consists of Lorenzo Cellupica (keyboards), Nico Fabrizi (saxophone, flute), Eros Capoccitti (bass) and Davide Rufo (drums). Their name refers of course to the infamous Möbius strip which geometrically connects the two sides of the same surface by starting a path on one of them. As the musicians state, it is their goal to combine different styles and influences. Their first work is their self-titled debut that was released by Musea.

An optimistic ambiguity

The debut of Möbius Strip honors the musical tradition of all the great pioneers of jazz-rock. All the components that make up the genre are here, the musicians are technically sound and in perfect coordination with each other, the production is shiny and yet the overall impression is dominated by the fact that something is missing.

Vigor is lacking, as is the experimentation that would “derail” the album from the rails of conventionality, which would give the listener the feeling that the band dares to be exposed by showing elements of its musical identity. In any case, the genre that Möbius Strip serve so reverently does not only favor innovation, it is looking for it.

Nevertheless, there is an optimistic ambiguity here. Despite the fact that in places the album is timid and lacks nerve, still there are times that the perspective of Möbius Strip is apparent. Τhe problem is not the lack of identity, but holding its expression back. Moments like Andalusia, which as the homonymous historical area of ​​southern Spain, is a crossroads and a place of encounter of diverse cultural features, here as well, the exotic elements and perfumes enrich the album, while the musical language established by Chick Corea runs through the atmosphere like a deafening echo. Moments like the title track, perhaps the best composition of the album, in which the band is freed from the pure jazz style and reveals the talent and personality of Eros Capotticci in an ethereal bass improvisation that gives a special breath to the track. Moments like Bloo, dominated by rhythm variations, which give a wild vitality, a live dynamic that is absent from the rest of the album.

However, the relative timidity of the young Romans (all of them just over 20 years old, coming from Sora, a few kilometers outside of Rome) is entirely justified by the fact that this is the debut of Möbius –composed as a whole by the exceptional keyboardist Lorenzo Cellupica- and as such really leaves lots of promises for the future. Α promise that the band will build a Möbius strip in musical contexts, in which different influences, heterogeneous trends, incompatible moments will communicate in a single musical pallet.

2^nd opinion

The debut of this Italian band is a rather unusual musical proposition, since the rock energy lags behind the jazz basis in their jazz-rock, remaining prog and fusion, but with simplicity and avoidance of even the least anticipated unnecessary phrasing. The technical level of the four musicians is very high, their collaboration is excellent and the development of the tracks is very good, but predictable in several parts. What I personally missed from this album is the nerve and fluctuations in tension. Whether or not this is due to the fact that it’s their debut or because they are jazz players may not be so important. The splendid main phrase of Bloo, the atmosphere of Andalusia and the title track in its entirety are the most valid arguments for a promising future.

Οι Möbius Strip είναι μία νέα progressive jazz-rock μπάντα από την Ιταλία αποτελούμενη από τους Lorenzo Cellupica (πλήκτρα), Nico Fabrizi (σαξόφωνο, φλάουτο), Eros Capoccitti (μπάσο) and Davide Rufo (ντραμς). Το όνομά τους είναι μία άμεση αναφορά στην ταινία του Möbius, η οποία γεωμετρικά ενώνει τις δύο πλευρές της ίδιας επιφάνειας. Στόχος των ίδιων είναι να ενώσουν διαφορετικά μουσικά στυλ και επιρροές. Το πρώτο δείγμα είναι το ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο τους που κυκλοφόρησε φέτος από την Musea.

Mια αισιόδοξη αμφισημία

Το ντεμπούτο των Möbius Strip τιμά την μουσική παρακαταθήκη των ιερών τεράτων του jazz-rock. Όλα τα συστατικά στοιχεία που δομούν το είδος βρίσκονται εδώ, οι μουσικοί είναι τεχνικά άρτιοι και σε απόλυτο συντονισμό μεταξύ τους, η παραγωγή είναι καλογυαλισμένη κι όμως συνολικά κυριαρχεί η εντύπωση ότι κάτι λείπει από την ακουστική εμπειρία.

Απουσιάζει η σφριγηλότητα, ο πειραματισμός που θα εκτροχιάσει τον δίσκο από τις ράγες της συμβατικότητας, που θα προσφέρει στον ακροατή την αίσθηση ότι η μπάντα τολμά και εκτίθεται δείχνοντας στοιχεία της μουσικής ταυτότητας της. Ούτως ή άλλως το μουσικό είδος που υπηρετούν ευλαβικά οι Möbius Strip δεν ευνοεί απλώς την καινοτομία, την επιζητά.

 Κι όμως, εδώ κρύβεται μια αισιόδοξη αμφισημία. Μπορεί σε σημεία το άλμπουμ να είναι άτολμο και άνευρο, αλλά υπάρχουν στιγμές που διαφαίνεται η προοπτική  των Möbius Strip. Tο πρόβλημα δεν είναι η έλλειψη ταυτότητας, αλλά η συγκράτηση της έκφρασής της. Στιγμές όπως το Andalusia, που όπως και η ομώνυμη ιστορική περιοχή της Νότιας Ισπανίας είναι σταυροδρόμι και τόπος συνάντησης ετερόκλητων πολιτισμικών χαρακτηριστικών, έτσι και εδώ, διανθίζει με εξωτικά στοιχεία και αρώματα το άλμπουμ, ενώ η μουσική γλώσσα που καθιέρωσε ο Chick Correa, διατρέχει την ατμόσφαιρα σαν εκκωφαντική ηχώ. Στιγμές όπως η ομώνυμη σύνθεση, ίσως η κορυφαία του δίσκου, στην οποία η μπάντα απελευθερώνεται από το αμιγώς jazz ύφος και αποκαλύπτεται το ταλέντο και η προσωπικότητα του Eros Capotticci σε έναν αιθέριο αυτοσχεδιασμό στο μπάσο που δίνει ξεχωριστή πνοή στο κομμάτι. Στιγμές όπως το Bloo, στο οποίο κυριαρχούν οι εναλλαγές ρυθμού, οι οποίες δίνουν μια άγρια ζωτικότητα, μια live δυναμική  η οποία απουσιάζει στον υπόλοιπο δίσκο.

Ωστόσο, η σχετική ατολμία των νεαρών Ρωμαίων (λίγο πάνω από τα 20 όλοι τους, για την ακρίβεια από την πόλη Sora κάποια χιλιόμετρα έξω από την Ρώμη) δικαιολογείται απόλυτα από το γεγονός ότι το Möbius Strip είναι το ντεμπούτο τους -το οποίο έχει συνθέσει αποκλειστικά ο εξαιρετικός Lorenzo Cellupica (πλήκτρα)- και ως τέτοιο αφήνει πραγματικά πολλές υποσχέσεις για το μέλλον. Υπόσχεση ότι η μπάντα θα κατασκευάσει μια λωρίδα του Möbius σε μουσικά συμφραζόμενα, στην οποία θα επικοινωνούν οι διαφορετικές επιρροές, οι ετερογενείς τάσεις, οι ασυμβίβαστες ροπές σε μια ενιαία μουσική παλέτα.

2^η γνώμη

Το ντεμπούτο των Ιταλών αποτελεί μια μάλλον ασυνήθιστη πρόταση, δεδομένου ότι στο jazz-rock τους η rock ενέργεια υπολείπεται της jazz βάσης, παραμένοντας prog και fusion, αλλά με κυρίαρχο χαρακτηριστικό την απλότητα και την αποφυγή έστω και ελάχιστης αναμενόμενης φλυαρίας. Το τεχνικό επίπεδο των τεσσάρων μουσικών είναι πολύ υψηλό, το δέσιμό τους εξαιρετικό και η ανάπτυξη των κομματιών πολύ καλή, αν και προβλέψιμη σε αρκετά σημεία. Αυτό που προσωπικά μου έλειψε από το album αυτό είναι το νεύρο και οι διακυμάνσεις στην ένταση. Το αν η σχετική ατολμία οφείλεται στο ότι πρόκειται για ντεμπούτο ή στις jazz καταβολές των μελών ίσως και να μην έχει τόσο μεγάλη σημασία. Η υπέροχη βασική φράση του Bloo, η ατμόσφαιρα του Andalusia και το ομώνυμο κομμάτι στην ολότητά του αποτελούν τά πιο βάσιμα επιχειρήματα για ένα πολλά υποσχόμενο μέλλον.
