Anciients – Voice of the Void

Anciients hail from Vancouver, Canada and were formed the July of 2010. Their debut Heart of Oak was one of the top metal releases in 2013 and also one of the best debuts of the year. With main features the absolutely successful combination of vintage rock with progressive and contemporary sludge, while the Mastodon influence creeps heavily upon them, the quartet of Kenny Cook (vocals, guitar), Chris Dyck (guitar, vocals), Aaron “Boon” Gustafson (bass)and Mike Hannay (drums) strikes back this year with the album Voice of the Void.

One step away from commercial success

The Canadians Anciient, following their much promising debut of 2013, come back this year with their new work. It is clear that during the three years that intervened since their debut album, they put their heart into measuring up to the amazing and promising Heart of Oak. Did they succeed?

This year’s Voice of the Void is modern and simultaneously vigorous, with adventurous and lengthy compositions and constant riffing through the entire album, a factor that differentiates this release from the previous one where the structure of the songs was simpler, but not simplistic in any case.

The group’s melting pot includes influences of all the metal/sludge bands of the moment in US.A. and not only. The first name that comes to mind is early Mastodon, in other words the groove of the aforementioned on their latest releases lacks. Bands like Baroness and Kylesa may be associated too, but Anciients play much faster compared to them on the better part of the record. The band pulls off to coalesce prog elements, as portrayed by Tool and not by traditional 60’s or 70’s prog acts, with all the modern styles of metal and its branches that are widely popular and commercially successful. Besides, the song Ibex Eye is , in their own words, an ode to the Americans.

Brutal and clean vocals have an equal share, no surprises here. The tone of the voice has nothing fancy but this is of little account since it blends harmonically with the album’s flaw and possesses the necessary spirit to make the compositions stand out. Most of them are high-speeded, and also of high-quality, while doom / sludge moments are not out of the picture, where Anciients are just as good.

To my ears the album is one notch below their debut, a fact that doesn’t take away from the album’s or the group’s esteem. There are times that the rambling riffing, no matter how killer it is, leaves no space for the compositions to breathe and therefore stand out. Granted, a few parts of the album are free of this, but it is a feature that was absent on the first album.

I am convinced that Anciients seek commercial success, aside the artistic. Is there anything wrong with that? Not by a long chalk. This aspiration, which is crystal clear to me, is bound to happen. I am dead certain that if Voice of the Void fails to do so, their next album will surely introduce them to the cream of the crop of this genre.

Anciients introduced themselves to the metal audience in 2013 with Heart of Oak, a tremendous record and personally I was impatient to see the course that they would strike out in the future. Voice of the Void put an end to my anticipation, where the band seems to stagnate, perhaps it takes a step back. Their trademark features are here, namely sludge metal with a progressive disposition, interchanges between clean and brutal vocals, influences by Mastodon and Baroness, atmosphere that brings The Ocean to mind and beautiful guitar solos. It is true that here we find Worshiper and Serpents, but there is also My Home, My Gallows, leaving an impression of an uneven album. All in all, is a very good record that is not just as great as its predecessor. It happens.

Οι Anciients από το Vancouver του Καναδά σχηματίστηκαν τον Ιούλιο του 2010 και το ντεμπούτο τους “Heart of Oak” αποτέλεσε μία από τις κορυφαίες metal κυκλοφορίες του 2013 και επίσης ένα από τα καλύτερα ντεμπούτα της χρονιάς. Έχοντας ως κύρια χαρακτηριστικά τον απόλυτα επιτυχημένο συνδυασμό vintage heavy rock με το progressive και το σύγχρονο sludge και την έντονη επιρροή Mastodon, το κουαρτέτο των Kenny Cook (φωνητικά, κιθάρα), Chris Dyck (κιθάρα, φωνητικά),  (μπάσο) and Mike Hannay (ντραμς) επέστρεψε φέτος με το “Voice of the Void”.

Ένα βήμα πριν την εμπορική καταξίωση

Οι Καναδοί Anciients μετά το πολλά υποσχόμενο ντεμπούτο τους του 2013 επιστρέφουν φέτος με το νέο πόνημά τους. Στα τρία χρόνια που μεσολάβησαν φαίνεται ότι  κατέβαλλαν κάθε δυνατή προσπάθεια να φανούν αντάξιοι του εξαιρετικού και ελπιδοφόρου “Heart of Oak”. Τα κατάφεραν;

Το φετινό “Voice of the Void”, σύγχρονο και δυναμικό συνάμα, με συνθέσεις περιπετειώδεις και μακρόσυρτες, με ένα καταιγισμό συνεχόμενων riffs σχεδόν καθ΄όλη τη διάρκεια του άλμπουμ και κάπου εδώ διαφοροποιούνται από το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ το οποίο διέθετε πιο απλή δομή τραγουδιών, σε καμία περίπτωση όμως απλοϊκή.

Το χωνευτήρι του συγκροτήματος περιλαμβάνει επιρροές όλων των επιτυχημένων αυτή τη στιγμή metal / sludge συγκροτημάτων στην αγορά των Η.Π.Α. και όχι μόνο. Το πρώτο όνομα που έρχεται στο μυαλό είναι οι Mastodon μεν, της πρώτης περιόδου δε, απουσιάζει με άλλα λόγια το groove των Mastodon των τελευταίων δίσκων. Συσχετισμοί άμεσοι μπορούν να γίνουν αδιαμφισβήτητα με τους Baroness και τους Kylesa, πολλές ταχύτητες πάνω όμως από τους προαναφερόμενους στα περισσότερα σημεία του δίσκου. Η μπάντα καταφέρνει να συγκεράσει prog στοιχεία, όπως αυτά προκύπτουν από τους Tool και όχι από παραδοσιακά prog  σχήματα των 60’s και 70’s, με όλες τις σύγχρονες εκφάνσεις του metal που γνωρίζει ευρύτερη εμπορική επιτυχία και των συγγενικών παρακλαδιών του. Άλλωστε το τραγούδι “Ibex Eye” σύμφωνα με τους ίδιους αποτελεί μία ωδή στους Αμερικάνους.

Τα φωνητικά μοιράζονται μεταξύ brutal και καθαρών, καμία έκπληξη επί της ουσίας. Τίποτα το συναρπαστικό σε χροιά φωνής, αλλά δεν έχει τόσο μεγάλη σημασία από τη στιγμή που εντάσσονται αρμονικά στη μουσική ροή τού άλμπουμ και διαθέτουν το απαραίτητο πάθος για να αναδείξουν τις συνθέσεις. Οι περισσότερες από αυτές κινούνται σε υψηλές ταχύτητες αλλά και σε υψηλή ποιότητα,   ενώ δε λείπουν οι πιο doom / sludge στιγμές όπου οι Anciients τα καταφέρνουν εξίσου καλά.

Στα αυτιά μου το άλμπουμ ηχεί ένα σκαλί κάτω από το ντεμπούτο τους, χωρίς αυτό να αφαιρεί τη σημασία του άλμπουμ ή του γκρουπ. Τα δαιδαλώδη riffs, όσο εξαιρετικά και να είναι, κάποιες στιγμές δεν αφήνουν τις συνθέσεις να αναπνεύσουν, οπότε και να αναδειχθούν, κάτι που συμβαίνει σε λίγα ομολογουμένως σημεία το άλμπουμ, κάτι το οποίο δεν το συναντούσαμε στο ντεμπούτο τους.

Είμαι πεπεισμένος ότι Anciients επιδιώκουν πλην της καλλιτεχνικής επιτυχίας και την εμπορική. Είναι κακό αυτό; Κάθε άλλο. Η επιδίωξή τους αυτή, ξεκάθαρη κατ΄εμέ, δείχνει να είναι καταδικασμένη στο να συμβεί. Εκφράζω τη βεβαιότητα ότι αν όχι με το “Voice of the Void” , τότε σίγουρα με το επόμενό τους άλμπουμ θα ενταχθούν στα μεγάλα σαλόνια του εν λόγω ήχου.

Οι Anciients συστήθηκαν στο metal κοινό το 2013 με το “Heart of Oak”, έναν καταπληκτικό δίσκο, και προσωπικά ανυπομονούσα να δω πως θα κινηθούν δισκογραφικά στο μέλλον. Η προσμονή μου τελείωσε φέτος με το “Voice of the Void”, όπου η μπάντα φαίνεται να μένει στάσιμη, ίσως να κάνει και ένα μικρό βήμα πίσω. Τα γνώριμα συστατικά του ήχου τους είναι εδώ, sludge metal με progressive διάθεση, εναλλαγή ακραίων και καθαρών φωνητικών, Mastodon και Baroness επιρροές, ατμοσφαιρική διάθεση που θυμίζει The Ocean και υπέροχα κιθαριστικά solo. Όμως φαίνεται πως κάτι λείπει και αυτό είναι η ποσότητα των καλών τραγουδιών. Ναι υπάρχει το “Worshiper” και το “Serpents”, αλλά υπάρχει και το “My home, My Gallows”, δίνοντας την εντύπωση ενός δίσκου άνισου. Εν γένει όμως πρόκειται για έναν πολύ καλό δίσκο που δεν κατάφερε να κοιτάξει στα μάτια τον προκάτοχό του. Συμβαίνει.
