The most compelling scene right now is this of Norway and that’s where the debut album of The Tronosonic Experience comes from. The band with the weird monicker consists of Øyvind Nypan on the guitar, Per Harald Ottesen on bass, Iver Loe Bjørnstad on the drums and percussion (I had a fleeting wonder if he was a relative of the famous Norwegian jazz composer/pianist Kjetil Bjørnstad but this is not the case) and Ole Jørgan Bardal on saxophone. No vocals here, instrumental-only compositions.

The musicians have a jazz background and their drummer, who is relatively the most acknowledged, is also a member of the very interesting band Hedvig Mollestad Trio, among others. The band defines itself as avant-jazz-punk-drone-rock from Norway, a definition that, if anything, pulls off to intrigue us.

High level of sonic enjoyment

The album was recorded live within three days, something that denotes the improvisational nature of the album. Nevertheless, the jazz-rock that the Norwegians deliver doesn’t sound like a result of a purely unrestrained jamming. One of the traits of the album is that the particularly high technical playing of the musicians doesn’t strike as a mere collaboration of extremely skillful jazz players – not by a long chalk; instead the final outcome is very pleasant to listen to. I’d chance to say that the same goes for the uninitiated to this kind of music listeners.

The duration of the record is almost 37 minutes which is ideal for an album of such kind. It doesn’t mean necessarily that if it was longer would wear the listener out, but perhaps it might take the edge off its easy-going flow. The members of the group themselves took care of the production. It’s clear and every instrument is audible, a fact that brings to the fore all the virtues of the musicians. Indeed, every member in this collaboration shines, but also the band as a whole. The improvisations on the guitar are, at times, technically impressive, the bassist is a great musician and no mistake (he is the primary songwriter of the band) while the amazing work on the drums deserves special mention. It’s high time we talked about the saxophone that functions as an equal instrument in the compositions and crowns the very good album of the Norwegians.

The style of Tronosonic Experience recalls bands like Hedvig Mollestad Trio, Elephant9, but also Møster! The common denominator of these bands is the Norwegian origin, but also how they fuse the jazz influences of the household names of the genre with the assorted sides of rock. But in all honesty, I failed to spot punk / drone elements in their music.

Along with the technical demanding compositions, there are others seemingly simpler that are gradually enriched and, in my view, this is what makes The Tronosonic Experience stand out. An illustrating example is A Quiet Flame as well as my personal favourite Catching the Nile Perch, two songs that my guess is they took their final shape after jamming sessions.

On the downside, zilch. All compositions are of high standards. This is no masterpiece, but its quality vouches for sonic enjoyment.

From its very first seconds, the debut of The Tronosonic Experience from Oslo brings a smile of delight to the fans of Scandinavian jazz-prog. This is a very tight quartet with split roles, the typical Norwegian jamming character and jazz injections that only in the North are made so discreetly and as a result, perfectly. The seven compositions of the album are characterized by splendid atmospheric (No Country for Young Men / Lights as Feather, Heavy as Lead Balloon / A Quiet Flame) or more energetic themes (Die Streif / The Crossing). Their music is a mosaic of various influences, mainly Elephant9, Møster! and Hedvig Mollestad Trio. If there is something negative here, it’s probably that the album sounds a bit predictable, which however may be secondary to the compositional weight of the tracks and it’s completely nullified when the band intelligently blends all the elements (Catching the Nile Perch).

Η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα σκηνή παγκοσμίως αυτή τη στιγμή, αυτή τη Νορβηγίας, μας προσφέρει το ομώνυμο  ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ των The Tronosonic Experience. Η μπάντα με το παράξενο αυτό όνομα αποτελείται από τους Øyvind Nypan στην κιθάρα, τον Per Harald Ottesen στο μπάσο, τον Iver Loe Bjørnstad στα ντραμς και στα κρουστά (αναρωτήθηκα αν έχει κάποια συγγένεια με το γνωστό Νορβηγό jazz-ίστα συνθέτη / πιανίστα Kjetil Bjørnstad, αλλά κάτι τέτοιο δε συμβαίνει) και τέλος τον Ole Jørgan Bardal στο σαξόφωνο. Φωνητικά δεν υπάρχουν, η μπάντα είναι instrumental.

Οι μουσικοί διαθέτουν jazz υπόβαθρο με τον γνωστότερο δισκογραφικά στο prog rock κοινό να είναι ο ντράμερ τους που συμμετέχει μεταξύ άλλων στους ενδιαφέροντες Hedvig Mollestad Trio. Η μπάντα μας συστήνεται ως avant-jazz-punk-drone-rock from Norway, ένας χαρακτηρισμός που αν μη τι άλλο, καταφέρνει να ιντριγκάρει.

Υψηλό επίπεδο ηχητικής απόλαυσης

Η ηχογράφηση του άλμπουμ έγινε σε συνθήκες live μέσα σε τρεις μέρες, κάτι που αποκαλύπτει και την αυτοσχεδιαστική ατμόσφαιρα που διακατέχει το άλμπουμ. Ωστόσο το jazz-rock των Νορβηγών ως αποτέλεσμα δεν ακούγεται ως προϊόν άκρατου τζαμαρίσματος και μόνο. Ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά του άλμπουμ είναι ότι το ιδιαίτερα τεχνικό παίξιμο των μουσικών καταφέρνει να μην φαντάζει ως μία απλή σύμπραξη εκπληκτικών jazz μουσικών -κάθε άλλο- αλλά να είναι και ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστο στο αυτί ως τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Πιθανολογώ  ακόμα και από κάποιον μη μυημένο σε τέτοια ακούσματα.

Η διάρκεια του άλμπουμ είναι περίπου στα 37 λεπτά, ιδανική για τέτοιου είδους άλμπουμ. Κάτι σε μεγαλύτερη διάρκεια δε θα κούραζε απαραίτητα αλλά ίσως στερούσε την ευκολοάκουστη ροή του. Την παραγωγή επιμελήθηκαν τα ίδια τα μέλη του γκρουπ. Διαυγής και με κάθε όργανο να ακούγεται καθαρά, επιτρέπει να φανερωθούν οι αρετές των μουσικών. Όντως, κάθε μέλος μέσα από αυτή τη συνεργασία λάμπει προσωπικά αλλά και συνολικά η μπάντα. Οι αυτοσχεδιασμοί στην κιθάρα σε σημεία είναι ιδιαίτερα εντυπωσιακοί τεχνικά, ο μπασίστας είναι ένας πραγματικά σπουδαίος μουσικός (αποτελεί και τον βασικό συνθέτη του συγκροτήματος), ενώ ιδιαίτερη μνεία πρέπει να γίνει στην φανταστική δουλειά που έχει γίνει στα ντραμς / κρουστά. Και κάπου εδώ έρχεται η παρουσία του σαξοφώνου ως ισότιμου οργάνου στις συνθέσεις να επιστεγάσει το πολύ καλό άλμπουμ των Νορβηγών.

Οι  ηχητικές αναφορές των The Tronosonic Experience είναι σίγουρα συγκροτήματα όπως οι Hedvig Mollestad Trio, οι Elephant9 αλλά και οι Møster! Κοινό χαρακτηριστικό αυτών η Νορβηγική καταγωγή αλλά και ο συγκερασμός των jazz επιρροών από τα μεγάλα ονόματα του χώρου με ποικίλες εκφάνσεις του rock. Ειλικρινά όμως, punk / drone στοιχεία δεν μπόρεσα να εντοπίσω στη μουσική τους.

Μαζί με τις απαιτητικά τεχνικά συνθέσεις, συνυπάρχουν άλλες φαινομενικά πιο λιτές, που σταδιακά εμπλουτίζονται και εκεί είναι που πιστεύω ξεχωρίζουν οι The Tronosonic Experience. Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα το A Quiet Flame και το προσωπικό αγαπημένο Catching the Nile Perch, που πιθανολογώ διαμορφώθηκαν στην τελική τους μορφή έπειτα από διαδικασία τζαμαρίσματος.

Αρνητικά στοιχεία δεν υπάρχουν στο άλμπουμ. Όλες οι συνθέσεις στέκουν σε υψηλό επίπεδο. Δε θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί ως αριστούργημα, αλλά η ποιότητά του εγγυάται ένα υψηλό επίπεδο ηχητικής απόλαυσης.

Από τα πρώτα δευτερόλεπτα, το ντεμπούτο των Tronosonic Experience από το Όσλο προκαλεί ένα χαμόγελο ευφορίας στους λάτρεις του σκανδιναβικού jazz-prog. Πρόκειται για ένα πολύ δεμένο κουαρτέτο με μοιρασμένους ρόλους, τον τυπικό νορβηγικό jamming χαρακτήρα και τις jazz ενέσεις που μόνο στον Βορρά γίνονται τόσο διακριτικά και ως αποτέλεσμα, εύστοχα. Οι επτά συνθέσεις του album χαρακτηρίζονται από υπέροχες φράσεις χτισμένες σε ατμοσφαιρικά (No Country for Young Men / Lights as a Feather, Heavy as a Lead Balloon / A Quiet Flame) ή πιο ενεργοβόρα θέματα (Die Streif / The Crossing). Η μουσική τους αποτελεί ένα μωσαϊκό με ποικίλες επιρροές, εκ των οποίων κυριαρχούν οι Elephant9, οι Møster! και οι Hedvig Mollestad Trio. Αν υπάρχει κάτι αρνητικό εδώ, ίσως είναι η μερική προβλεψιμότητα, που μπορεί να γίνεται δευτερεύουσα υπό το συνθετικό βάρος των κομματιών, αλλά εκμηδενίζεται εμφανώς όταν η μπάντα μπλέκει ευφυώς όλα τα συστατικά της (Catching the Nile Perch).
