During 2016 we listened to numerous albums, some of which stood out and were included in our annual album chart (link). However, there were some songs that we got stuck with, songs from extraordinary or even mediocre albums. These tracks were played on repeat and constitute our soundtrack of 2016. Here we present 20 of them, indicative and yet seemingly random.
Farmhouse Odyssey – Space Revealed
[Album: Rise of the Waterfowl]
Space Revealed is a source for musical connotations. I remembered when I discovered Hatfield & the North and Gilgamesh. The experience you get is the phlegmatic, introspective British style, coupled with fusion energy and jazz / pop harmonies in sensible doses and a feeling of unrivaled inspiration. The way the song climaxes, the apogee with the guitar solo, all this flawless succession of moods and ideas left me no other choice than hit the play button repeatedly. It works wonders either as individual song either as a part of Rise of the Waterfowl‘s beautiful entirety.

Savages – Slowing Down The World
[Album: Adore Life]
Super girls. The drummer is up there with the best, regardless of the gender. “Daughters” of the mainstream. So what? The whole record is a killer and a sluggish tune like this brings to my mind the debut of A Perfect Circle. Nostalgic, draggy with a playful rhythm yet immersed in its darkness of its own. As a bonus, a mini black metal 1994 scream in between. Repeat!

Motorpsycho – Big Black Dog

The search for hope in a frosty environment where perils for the lonely spirit lurk, is the topic of the lyrics of this 17-minute cut. The mood swings of this researched are depicted musically too. Three minutes of calm, then a doomy riff where the song is built upon, while the mellotron makes its appearance and progressively justifies its presence before calm dominates for a while before the heavy part begins anew, allowing for peace to prevail at the end, seemingly at least since the journey and the adversities are likely to have no end…

uKanDanZ – Sèwotch Men Yelalu

A unique song that is wrapped up with the admirable tremolo voice of Gebreyes, and the jazz-rock and traditional Ethiopian music are blended successfully. The combination of the frenzy avant-prog group with a charismatic voice, delivers an energetic song that consists of a howling saxophone, attractive drumming and busy instrumentation with vigorous improvised structures. An experienced jazz or avant-prog folk audience would definitely appreciate it.

Mondo Drag – Rising Omen
[Album: The Occultation of Light]
Rising Omen could place Mondo Drag at the pantheon of the neo-psychedelic generation in its own right with its hypnotizing variations but fortunately is a more complicated case. The keyboards build and rebuild for about two and a half minutes while John Gamino’s voice comes into play to preface one of the most beautiful solos that have been lately around. Its riff is monolithic, too. Stoner fans will take a liking to it probably.

Heron Oblivion – Your Hollows

Any out of the seven stunning tunes of the impeccable debut of Heron Oblivion could make the cut. It is just that here both of the main elements of the band are ideally showcased. The amazing voice of Meg Baird reaches dizzying heights and leads us to the heavy psych of the rest that creeps deformed upon her minimal drumming. An uncompromising tune-manual of impeccable British folk psych from Oakland, California.

Terrace Martin feat. Kamasi Washington & Rose Gold – Think Of You
[Album: Velvet Portraits]
In 2016 Terrace Martin made Velvet Portraits, an all-star album in which we see the elite of “academic” black music of today. The participation of the extraordinary Kamasi Washington makes Think Of You stand out. A seemingly typical example of well played chill out jazz, which culminates in Washington’s solo in saxophone to end up progressively in emptying and degradation of the song. The smooth bursting in the introduction is the bee’s knees.

Woods – Can’t See At All
[Album: City Sun Eater in the River of Light]
The ninth album by the American psychedelic / indie folk rockers Woods offered a plethora of understandable and addictive songs. One of them, Can not See At All, the second single of last year’s splendid album, is a five-minute psychedelic funk song with distinct reggae / African jazz vibrations able to drift you away with the playful, dancing rhythm. It’s the appropriate song to highlight the hidden stimulant and euphoric feelings.

Unfulfilled expectations, lost lives and time which flows relentlessly until the inevitable ending, a destiny that binds us all together, regardless of origin, age and belief in a tragic unity, a fate that everyone tries to exorcise in a different way but the ending is common for everyone, one of the greatest outlaw country songs of the 21st century, in one of the most dynamic and creative records of its kind since a very long time.

At a time when the return to more vintage sounds and periods -a return assisted by the appropriate media and ultimately rather serves purposes that have nothing to do with the spirit of a past period- the appearance of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard with the dynamite song People Vultures is a brave exception. Psych rock in line with the myths of the genre, ingenuity in equal doses of ‘surreal’ origin, People Vultures rightly claims the title of the best track of the year that left us. Essential for the lovers of the 60s.

Radiohead – Identikit
[Album: A Moon Shaped Pool]
Identikit acts as a cornerstone for A Moon Shaped Pool, as once did likewise Idioteque for Kid A. Throughout the track reverie and delirium coexist as funk, rock and electronica elements come together ecstatically. A flexible composition that starts in a quiet background and eventually culminates in an acoustic setting with a cosmic aura.

Not Blood Paint – The French Song
[Album: Believing Is Believing]
We turn the time (probably) half a century back and hear about a heist that takes place in the birthplace of Napoleon. We enjoy the theatricality, the eroticism and identify with the deception of the protagonist. As intricately he was deceived, as much The French Song of Not is equally laid out by Blood Paint, accompanied by the humor of the Americans that goes through the entire album (Believing Is Believing). The narrative is not a noir project that we might watch at the cinema, but a work of art in one of the biggest releases of 2016. Just flawless!

Michael Kiwanuka – Cold Little Heart
[Album: Love & Hate]
Michael Kiwanuka declares to be a Black man in a white world, which becomes clear from the opening track of his last record. Cold Little Heart slowly begins as a soul version of Pink Floyd, with the orchestration choice of string instruments and gospel touches to enchant the listener. The change of the tempo after the middle of the piece, accompanied by the warm voice of Kiwanuka (the comparisons with legends such as Otis Reading and Issac Hayes have already gone off), entangles the soul and RnB tradition with the English melancholy, while returning to the original theme just before the closure intensifies the Floyd associations. The winners out of this ten-minute masterpiece come all those who hear music alike with the mind and heart.

Caverns is the song that contains all the elements that can describe the music of Thank You Scientist, and at the same time all the elements that can make you press on the repeat button. What is old becomes new again. Unlike pretty much everything new in heavy metal genre that sounds so boring and uninspired, these guys from Texas are truly amazing. The opening track I Am The Hammer from their killer debut album takes you on a nostalgic journey back in time through the glorious days of this sound. Crunchy and melodic riffs, the sing along chorus, killer vocal delivery and the overall atmosphere strikes you directly in the face and get stuck in your head for days. Don’t miss this if you claim to be a fan of real Heavy Metal!

The Answer – Beautiful World

Beautiful World by The Answer might be the piece that I heard the most times in 2016. But, you might think, the record was released in October. Exactly! What fascinated me from the first moment was the oriental intro with a great voice, the heavy riffs which surround one of the best guitar solos I’ve heard for a long time, the simple and pounding drumming, but above all the sense of optimism it left when it ended. I recommend it to anyone looking for a bit, to give him motivation when he starts the day.

Is it post punk? Is it shoegaze? Or would it be better to simply characterize it as dance indie rock? Cecile, the song by the Londoners Pumarosa, defies our usual stylistic boundaries, combining the darkest moments of Cure, the arousing rhythm of LCD Soundsystem and an element of roughened free jazz. The voice of Isabel Munoz-Newsome, although equally influenced by Siouxsie Sioux and Kate Bush, bears a strong personal stamp, bringing intensity, passion and a ceremonial atmosphere.
Seize the opportunity to discover Pumarosa, one of the most promising and fresh bands of the indie / alternative rock scene.

Το Space Revealed προσφέρεται για πολλούς μουσικούς συνειρμούς. Με πήγε πάρα πολλά χρόνια πίσω, όταν ανακάλυπτα τους Hatfield & the North και τους Gilgamesh. To φλεγματικό, ενδοσκοπικό ύφος της Βρετανικής σχολής συνδυασμένο με την fusion ενέργεια και τις jazz / pop αρμονίες σε σωστές δόσεις και με συναίσθημα απαράμιλλης έμπνευσης ως εμπειρία. Η κλιμακωτή ανάπτυξη, η κορύφωση με το απογειωτικό κιθαριστικό solo, όλη αυτή η αλάνθαστη διαδοχή διαθέσεων και ιδεών με ανάγκασε σε πολλαπλές, συχνές ακροάσεις. Στέκεται το ίδιο καλά είτε μόνο του, είτε ως μέρος της υπέροχης ολότητας του Rise of the Waterfowl.

Ε και; Ένας δίσκος δυναμίτης και ένα αργόσυρτο τραγούδι όπως αυτό, που μου φέρνει στο μυαλό το ντεμπούτο των A Perfect Circle. Νοσταλγικό, αργόσυρτο, με παιχνιδιάρικο ρυθμό μέσα στο ολόδικο σκοτάδι του όμως. Bonus μία mini black metal 1994 κραυγή κάπου ανάμεσα. Repeat!

Η αναζήτηση ελπίδας σε ένα παγωμένο περιβάλλον που ενεδρεύει κινδύνους για το μοναχικό πνεύμα συνιστά το στιχουργικό υπόβαθρο του 17λεπτου κομματιού. Oι μεταπτώσεις αυτής της αναζήτησης αποτυπώνονται στο μουσικό σκέλος. Τα τρία λεπτά ηρεμίας ακολουθούνται από ένα doomy riff πάνω στο οποίο χτίζεται το κομμάτι, ενώ το mellotron κάνει την εμφάνιση του και προοδευτικά εδραιώνει τη παρουσία του πριν επέλθει για λίγο ηρεμία για να ξεκινήσει εκ νέου το σκληρό μέρος που αφήνει στο τέλος τη γαλήνη να επικρατήσει, έστω και φαινομενικά, γιατί το ταξίδι και οι δυσκολίες του προμηνύονται ατέρμονες…

Ένα μοναδικό κομμάτι, τυλιγμένο με την αξιοθαύμαστη φωνή του Guebreyes, όπου επιτυχώς η jazz και η παραδοσιακή Αιθιοπική μουσική αναμειγνύονται. Ο συνδυασμός του γαλλικού avant-prog γκρουπ με μια χαρισματική φωνή, παραδίδει ένα δυναμικό κομμάτι που αποτελείται από ένα οργιάζον σαξόφωνο, ελκυστικό drumming και πολυάσχολη ενορχήστρωση με έντονες αυτοσχέδιες δομές. Ένα έμπειρο jazz ή avant-prog folk κοινό θα το εκτιμήσει σίγουρα!

Το Rising Omen θα μπορούσε από μόνο του να κατατάξει τους Mondo Drag στο πάνθεον της νέο-ψυχεδελικής γενιάς συγκροτημάτων με την υπνωτική του διακύμανση. Eυτυχώς είναι αρκετά πιο ιδιαίτερη περίπτωση. Τα πλήκτρα χτίζουν και ξαναχτίζουν για περίπου δυόμιση λεπτά, ενώ η φωνή του John Gamino εισέρχεται για να προλογίσει ένα από τα πιο όμορφα solos που έχουν παιχτεί τώρα τελευταία. Έχει και μονολιθικό riff: θα αρέσει και στους στονεράδες, λογικά.

Heron Oblivion – Your Hollows

Θα μπορούσε να είναι οποιοδήποτε από τα επτά εξαιρετικά κομμάτια του αψεγάδιαστου ντεμπούτου των Heron Oblivion. Απλώς εδώ αναδεικνύονται ιδανικά και τα δύο κύρια στοιχεία της μπάντας: η καταπληκτική φωνή της Meg Baird, που ως άλλη Celia Humphris ανεβαίνει σε δυσθεώρητα ύψη και μας οδηγεί στο heavy psych των υπολοίπων, που έρπεται παραμορφωμένο πάνω στο μινιμαλιστικό drumming της. Ένα κομμάτι – εγχειρίδιο άψογου βρετανοπρεπούς folk psych χωρίς συμβιβασμούς, από το Οakland της California.

Να το ακούσεις. Γιατί γράφτηκε με συναίσθηση, γιατί προκαλεί δέος, γιατί θα ταυτιστείς. Να το ακούσεις, όχι μόνο γιατί πρόκειται για μια ερμηνεία που σε καθηλώνει, αλλά και γιατί καταφέρνει να σε βάλει μες την ιστορία του. Να παραδοθείς, να αφήσεις την ψυχή σου να βουτήξει βαθιά στο ποτάμι κι ας μην ξέρεις που θα καταλήξεις. Το σίγουρο είναι ότι μέσα από αυτό το άκουσμα, σε αντίθεση με τον τίτλο του, θα συνειδητοποιήσεις τη δύναμή σου.

Οι Causa Sui μας παρουσιάζουν τον βαρύ ψυχεδελικό ήχο του αύριο, σήμερα! Κάθε φορά που το ακούς αισθάνεσαι ένα δεκάλεπτο ασταμάτητο σφυροκόπημα του νου σε αιθέρια ψυχεδελικά τοπία. Η μπάντα δείχνει να έχει επιλέξει να κινηθεί σε πιο heavy psych καταστάσεις και αυτή είναι η συνταγή για τη δημιουργία του σύγχρονου σκληρού ήχου. Για τη χρονιά που μας άφησε το Dust Meridian είναι η απόλυτη psychedelic εμπειρία την οποία και ζήσαμε και στην εμφάνισή των Causa Sui στα μέρη μας.

Terrace Martin feat. Kamasi Washington & Rose Gold – Think Of You

Το 2016 ο Terrace Martin έφτιαξε ένα all-star άλμπουμ μέσα στο οποίο παρελάζει η αφρόκρεμα της «ακαδημαϊκής» μαύρης μουσικής του σήμερα, το Velvet Portraits. Η συμμετοχή του εκπληκτικού Kamasi Washington κάνει το Think Of You να ξεχωρίζει. Ένα φαινομενικά τυπικό δείγμα καλοπαιγμένης chill out jazz μουσικής, το οποίο όμως κορυφώνεται με το solo του Washington στο σαξόφωνο για να επέλθει προοδευτικά το άδειασμα και η αποδόμηση του κομματιού. Το smooth σκάσιμο στην εισαγωγή όλα τα λεφτά.

Woods – Can’t See At All

Το ένατο album των Αμερικανών psychedelic / indie folk rockers Woods, προσέφερε πληθώρα εύληπτων και εθιστικών τραγουδιών. Ένα εξ αυτών, το Can’t See At All, το δεύτερο single του περσινού πλέον, εξαιρετικού δίσκου τους, αποτελεί ένα πεντάλεπτο ψυχεδελικό funk άσμα με ευδιάκριτες reggae / African jazz δονήσεις ικανό να παρασύρει με τον εύθυμο, χορευτικό ρυθμό του τον οιονδήποτε μουσικόφιλο. Τραγούδι που ενδείκνυται για την ανάδειξη των κεκρυμμένων διεγερτικών και ευφορικών συναισθημάτων.

Ανεκπλήρωτες προσδοκίες, χαμένες ζωές και χρόνος που κυλάει αδυσώπητα μέχρι το αναπόφευκτο τέλος, μια μοίρα μας δένει όλους μας, ανεξαρτήτως προέλευσης, ηλικίας και πεποιθήσεων σε μια τραγική ενότητα, μια μοίρα που ο καθένας μας προσπαθεί να την ξορκίσει με διαφορετικό τρόπο αλλά η κατάληξη είναι κοινή για όλους, σε ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα outlaw country τραγούδια του 21ου αιώνα, σε έναν από τους πιο δυναμικούς και ανανεωτικούς δίσκους στο είδος εδώ και πάρα πολλά χρόνια.

Σε μια εποχή όπου η επιστροφή σε πιο vintage ήχους και εποχές -επιστροφή που συνεπικουρείται από τα ανάλογα media και εν τέλει υπηρετεί μάλλον σκοπούς που ουδεμία σχέση έχουν με το πνεύμα μιας παρελθούσας εποχής- η εμφάνιση των King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard με το κομμάτι – δυναμίτη People Vultures είναι μια γενναία εξαίρεση στον κανόνα. Psych σε απευθείας σύνδεση με τους μύθους του είδους, ευρηματικότητα με ισόποσες δόσεις «σουρεαλιστικής» προέλευσης, το People Vultures δικαίως διεκδικεί τον τίτλο του καλύτερου κομματιού της χρονιάς που μας άφησε. Απαραίτητο για τους λάτρεις των 60s.

To Identikit λειτουργεί σαν ακρογωνιαίος λίθος για το A Moon Shaped Pool, όπως κάποτε έπραττε το Idioteque για το Kid A. Στη διάρκειά του συνυπάρχουν ονειροπόληση και παραλήρημα, καθώς funk, rock και electronica στοιχεία σμίγουν εκστατικά. Ο λόγος για μια ευέλικτη σύνθεση που εκκινεί σε ήρεμο φόντο για να κορυφωθεί τελικά σε ένα ηχητικό σκηνικό με κοσμική (cosmic) αύρα.

Not Blood Paint – The French Song
[Album: Believing Is Believing]
Γυρίζουμε το χρόνο (πιθανώς) μισό αιώνα πίσω και ακούμε μια ληστεία που λαμβάνει χώρα στη γενέτειρα του Ναπολέοντα. Απολαμβάνουμε τη θεατρικότητα, τον ερωτισμό και ταυτιζόμαστε με την εξαπάτηση του πρωταγωνιστή. Όσο καλοστημένα εξαπατήθηκε ο ίδιος, άλλο τόσο καλοστημένο είναι το Τhe French Song των Not Blood Paint, συνοδευόμενο από το χιούμορ των Αμερικανών που διέπει όλο το δίσκο τους (Believing Is Believing). Η αφήγηση δεν είναι ένα noir έργο που θα παρακολουθούσαμε στον κιν/φο, αλλά ένα έργο τέχνης σε μία από τις σημαντικότερες κυκλοφορίες του 2016. Απλά αψεγάδιαστο!

Michael Kiwanuka – Cold Little Heart
[Album: Love & Hate]
Ο Michael Kiwanuka δηλώνει Black man in a white world, κάτι που γίνεται σαφές από το εναρκτήριο κομμάτι του τελευταίου του δίσκου. Το Cold Little Heart αρχίζει αργά ως μια soul εκδοχή των Pink Floyd, με την ενορχηστρωτική επιλογή των εγχόρδων και τις gospel πινελιές να μαγεύουν τον ακροατή. Το ανέβασμα του tempo μετά τη μέση του κομματιού, συνοδευόμενο από την ζεστή φωνή του Kiwanuka (ήδη έχουν αρχίσει οι συγκρίσεις με μύθους όπως ο Otis Reading και ο Issac Hayes), μπλέκει την soul και RnB παράδοση με την αγγλική μελαγχολία, ενώ η επιστροφή στο αρχικό θέμα λίγο πριν το κλείσιμο εντείνει τους Floyd συνειρμούς. Κερδισμένοι από αυτό το δεκάλεπτο αριστούργημα βγαίνουν όλοι όσοι ακούνε μουσική εξίσου με το μυαλό και την καρδιά.

To Caverns είναι το κομμάτι που περιέχει όλα τα στοιχεία που μπορούν να περιγράψουν τη μουσική των Thank You Scientist, αλλά ταυτόχρονα και όλα τα στοιχεία που μπορούν να σε κάνουν να βάλεις ένα κομμάτι στο repeat. Το πνεύμα της ψυχεδελικής folk των late 60s αναβιώνει μοναδικά και αυθεντικά μέσα από καταπληκτικά κομμάτια σαν το Sullen Mind. Τα έργα πρωτίστως του Tim Buckley αλλά και του Nick Drake αποτελούν πηγή έμπνευσης για τον συγκινητικό Αμερικανό, ωστόσο μερικά ψήγματα από την πειραματική folk περίοδο των Popol Vuh είναι αυτά που απογειώνουν την σύνθεση σε δυσθεώρητα ύψη. To παλιό γίνεται ξανά καινούργιο. Σε αντίθεση με σχεδόν οτιδήποτε νέο στο heavy metal (που ακούγεται βαρετό και ανέμπνευστο) αυτοί οι τύποι από το Texas είναι εκπληκτικοί. Το εναρκτήριο κομμάτι I Am The Hammer από το φοβερό τους ντεμπούτο σε πηγαίνει σε ένα νοσταλγικό ταξίδι πίσω στο χρόνο στις ένδοξες ημέρες αυτού του ήχου. Σκληρά και μελωδικά riffs, το sing along ρεφραίν, τα άψογα φωνητικά και όλη η ατμόσφαιρα σε χτυπούν στο πρόσωπο και καρφώνονται στο κεφάλι σου για μέρες. Μην το χάσεις αν είσαι οπαδός του πραγματικού Heavy Metal!

The Answer – Beautiful World

Το Beautiful World των The Answer ίσως είναι το κομμάτι που άκουσα περισσότερες φορές το 2016. Μα, θα μου πεις, ο δίσκος βγήκε τον Οκτώβριο. Ακριβώς! Με γοήτευσε από την πρώτη στιγμή το ανατολίτικο intro του με την υπέροχη φωνή, το heavy riff του που το πλαισιώνει ένα από τα ωραιότερα lead που έχω ακούσει εδώ και καιρό, τα απλά και πορωτικά ντραμς, αλλά πάνω από όλα το αίσθημα αισιοδοξίας που μου άφηνε όταν τελείωνε. Το προτείνω σε όποιον ψάχνει ένα κομμάτι, να του δίνει κίνητρο όταν ξεκινά τη μέρα του.

Είναι post punk; Είναι shoegaze; Ή μήπως θα ήταν καλύτερο απλά να το χαρακτηρίσουμε ως χορευτικό indie rock; Το τραγούδι Cecile των Λονδρέζων Pumarosa αψηφά τις συνηθισμένες στιλιστικές μας οριοθετήσεις, συνδυάζοντας τις σκοτεινότερες στιγμές των Cure, τον ξεσηκωτικό ρυθμό των LCD Soundsystem και ένα στοιχείο αγριεμένης free jazz. Τα φωνητικά της Isabel Munoz-Newsome, αν και επηρεασμένα ισάξια από την Siouxsie Sioux και την Kate Bush, έχουν έντονη προσωπική σφραγίδα, μεταφέροντας ένταση, πάθος αλλά και ένα τελετουργικό κλίμα.
Αδράξτε της ευκαιρίας να ανακαλύψετε τους Pumarosa, μία από τις πιο ελπιδοφόρες και φρέσκιες μπάντες της indie / alternative rock σκηνής.
