Mother of Millions – Sigma

Our first acquaintance with Mother of Millions was their debut album Human. Their second one Sigma verifies that the initial enthusiasm was absolutely justifiable and this is not about a mere promising band. Their whole attitude is professional, their sound is fine-tuned, their arrangements have clearly evolved compared to their first album. It is a truism talking about “a flourishing Greek prog scene” since its weightiness is so obviously of a worldwide caliber.

When Sigma stands for superiority

The first review I ever did for progrocks.gr was about Human, the first album of Mother of Millions. I still remember what this alt-prog album of the Greek quintet did to me. The positive impressions were reinforced by a live show at New Long Festival a couple of summers ago and the culmination of this was that they opened for Leprous at their gig in Athens. I think that this show spawned the seed of change, shifting from alt-prog to a more experimental prog metal take of things, while sneaking furtive glances towards progressive rock.

On Sigma the band remains at a high level, technically-wise, and the keyboards play a more important role without this meaning that the rhythm section or the guitars are not up to par. Of course the bar of the compositions is set up high and the production, aside from strong and clear, is so meticulously taken care of that leaves a sensation of cohesion throughout the album. Mother of Millions are still chiefly influenced by Tool, but on this album they have grafted elements from Leprous, Gravitysays_i (on the title-track) and a dash from Mars Volta on their sound.

Naturally, they haven’t severed ties with their past, since the tunes that lead off the album could be easily included in Human, but as the record flaws the songs portray the new direction of the band which is more melodious. Illustrious examples are Rome (that’s where Mars Volta come into play) and Collision, while the instrumental Τheir Passage, The Light and The Rapture showcase the knack of the band to compose songs that encompass elements from avant-garde to hints of traditional Greek music. The climax, in my view, is Spiral with djent guitars, tribal drums, dreamy keyboards and a melodious refrain, a combination that illustrates their ability to compose truly “big” songs.

On their second album, Mother of Millions deliver 40 minutes of quality and progressive metal , an album which is streets ahead compared to its predecessor, a solid album featuring a personal sound and blazes its way from start to finished free of weak moments. In my opinion it is an album that is on the match with any alt-prog release, no matter where it comes from. This is one of the best albums of the year.

Second album for Mother of Millions and there is another face (or is it the same?) on the cover that looks us straight in the eye as if it asks us to apologize. Sigma treads on the same sound motifs and the aesthetic standards of its predecessor, only this time they are more solid and mature. Crossover / alt prog sounds with tight rhythm section which fits nicely with the sharp guitar riffs. As expected, the vocals serve masterfully the music since they place much emphasis on the heavy parts and they load with emotion the quieter ones. Aside the “traditional” alt-prog sounds the band goes on enriching the arrangements with eastern elements and traditional instruments that make the whole experience more fascinating. When Human was released there was a cautious optimism about the future of the band. Now I think that the future is here and Sigma gives a hand to the promotion of the Greek scene.

Η πρώτη μας επαφή με τους Αθηναίους Mother of Millions ήταν στο ντεμπούτο τους Human (οι κριτικές μας εδώ). To δεύτερο album τους, Sigma, έρχεται να επιβεβαιώσει πως ο αρχικός ενθουσιασμός ήταν απόλυτα δικαιολογημένος και ότι δεν πρόκειται απλά για μία ελπιδοφόρα μπάντα. Το στήσιμό τους πλέον είναι απόλυτα επαγγελματικό, ο ήχος τους πιο δουλεμένος, οι ενορχηστρώσεις τους εμφανώς εξελιγμένες σε σχέση με το ντεμπούτο τους. Τα περί ακμάζουσας ελληνικής prog σκηνής χάνουν πια μέρος του νοήματός τους, όταν το εκτόπισμα έχει τόσο προφανώς διεθνές βεληνεκές.

When Sigma stands for superiority

Η πρώτη κριτική που έγραψα για το progrocks.gr ήταν για το ντεμπούτο των Mother of Millions, Human, και θυμάμαι την φοβερή εντύπωση που μου είχε κάνει αυτός ο alt-prog δίσκος του ελληνικού κουιντέτου. Οι θετικές εντυπώσεις συνεχίστηκαν με ένα live τους στο New Long festival που είχα παρακολουθήσει πριν κανα δυο καλοκαίρια και το αποκορύφωμα ήταν όταν άνοιξαν για τους Leprous στην Αθήνα (λεπτομέρειες εδώ). Αυτό το live με τους Leprous νομίζω ότι έσπειρε το σπόρο της αλλαγής τους από to alt-prog σε ένα πιο πειραματικό prog metal που λοξοκοιτά προς το progressive rock.

Στο Sigma η μπάντα παραμένει σε πολύ υψηλό επίπεδο τεχνικά, με τα πλήκτρα αυτή τη φορά να παίζουν πιο ουσιαστικό ρόλο στα κομμάτια τους, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι το rhythm section ή η κιθάρα υστερούν. Βέβαια, ο πήχης των συνθέσεων έχει ανέβει πάρα πολύ και η παραγωγή εκτός από δυνατή και καθαρή είναι τόσο μελετημένη που δίνει μια αίσθηση συνοχής σε όλο τον δίσκο. Οι Mother of Millions παραμένουν επηρεασμένοι από τους Tool κατά βάση, όμως σε αυτόν τον δίσκο έχουν μπολιάσει τον ήχο τους με στοιχεία από Leprous, Gravitysays_i στο ομώνυμο τραγούδι και λίγο The Mars Volta.

Βέβαια δεν έχουν αποκοπεί από το παρελθόν τους, καθώς ειδικά τα πρώτα τραγούδια του δίσκου θα μπορούσαν να βρίσκονται άνετα στο Human, όμως καθώς κυλά ο δίσκος τα κομμάτια μας παρουσιάζουν ένα νέο πρόσωπο της μπάντας πιο μελωδικό με χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα τα Rome (The Mars Volta που λέγαμε) και Collision, ενώ τα ορχηστρικά Τheir Passage, The Light και The Rapture δείχνουν την ικανότητα της μπάντας να συνθέτει με avant-garde έως και υποψία ελληνικών παραδοσιακών στοιχείων. Βέβαια το αποκορύφωμα του δίσκου κατά την άποψή μου είναι το Spiral που με την djent-like κιθάρα, τα tribal τύμπανα, τα ταξιδιάρικα πλήκτρα και το μελωδικό refrain του δείχνει την ικανότητα της μπάντας να γράφει πραγματικά «μεγάλα» κομμάτια.

Στον δεύτερό τους δίσκο οι Mother of Millions μας παραδίδουν 40 λεπτά πολύ ποιοτικού προοδευτικού metal, έναν δίσκο κλάσεις ανώτερο του προκατόχου του, έναν δίσκο συμπαγή, έναν δίσκο με προσωπικότητα, έναν δίσκο που ακούγεται από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος χωρίς να έχει αδύναμες στιγμές. Κατά την άποψή μου πρόκειται για έναν δίσκο που κοιτά στα μάτια οποιαδήποτε κυκλοφορία του alt-prog χώρου απ’ όπου και αν προέρχεται. Πρόκειται για έναν από τους καλύτερους δίσκους της χρονιάς.

Δεύτερος δίσκος για τους Mother of Millions και δεύτερο πρόσωπο (ή είναι το ίδιο) να μας κοιτάει κατάματα σαν να μας ζητάει να απολογηθούμε. Το Sigma έχει στο ίδιο ηχητικό μοτίβο και αισθητική που τέθηκαν στον προκάτοχο του, αλλά αυτή τη φορά πιο συγκροτημένα και ακόμα πιο ώριμα. Crossover / alt prog ήχοι, με στιβαρό rhythm section το οποίο δένει ωραία με τα κοφτά riff στις κιθάρες. Τα φωνητικά όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο εξυπηρετούν στο έπακρο τη μουσική αφού δίνουν έμφαση στα heavy μέρη και φορτίζουν συναισθηματικά τα πιο μελωδικά. Πέρα από τους «παραδοσιακούς» alt-prog ήχους, η μπάντα συνεχίζει να εμπλουτίζει τις ενορχηστρώσεις της με ανατολίτικα στοιχεία και πιο παραδοσιακά όργανα που κάνουν την όλη εμπειρία του δίσκου ακόμα πιο ξεχωριστή. Μετά την κυκλοφορία του Human υπήρχε μια συγκρατημένη αισιοδοξία για το μέλλον της μπάντας. Πλέον νομίζω ότι το μέλλον είναι εδώ και το Sigma βοηθά στην προώθηση ολόκληρης της ελληνικής σκηνής.
