Thank You Scientist – Stranger Heads Prevail

Thank You Scientist can easily be described as a crossover prog band, but I think it takes an extra effort to describe their music. A bit of jazz, a bit of big band influences, an extremely tight rhythm section and all this always with some sufficient energy dose. Perhaps this is a more precise description of their sound.

Stranger Heads Prevail is the second album of the band from New Jersey, who with their first release in 2012 Maps of Non-Extent Places stimulated Claudio Sanchez’s interest, who chose them as Coheed and Cambria’s exclusive opening act and offered them a contract with Evil Ink Records, which re-released their first album in 2014.

There may be no keyboardist in the septet of Thank You Scientist, but the wind instruments and the violin create a memorable sound. What is particularly special in Stranger Heads Prevail is that there is a balance between various genres. The wind instruments are constantly playing along with the rhythm section, thus creating a fullest sound. The orchestrations are meticulous and often the classical instruments lead the music, adopting kinda big band style. The very good use of instruments such as the wind instruments and the violin makes the sound of Thank you Scientist unique. The compositions are all very melodic and mostly quite pleasant. There is an overwhelming positive energy throughout the album. Salvatore Marrano’s vocals who is highly theatrical, contribute to the final result. Mr. Invisible is a pretty good example of Sal’s vocal skills, but also of the explosive mixture of the TYS.

Each musician has something positive and different to offer to the sound and the tracks are impressively structured, so there is plenty of room for it. Tom Monda offers excellent leads and fills in Caverns, while his solo in Blue Automatic is hugely enjoyable. Odin Alvarez, the drummer, is also an important factor throughout the album, either by keeping a nice groove in the faster tracks like The Somnambulist, or by offering up to a more oriental rhythm as in Psychopomp. The advantage with each musician having his own space is that every solo -besides being technically superb- is very carefully placed on each piece and independent at the same time. And this applies to the guitar, the saxophone, the violin and the drums.

Inevitably though, too much space sometimes gives the impression that some parts are overloaded and perhaps a little verbose. This results in tracks such as A Wolf in Cheap Clothing and Need More Input which are a bit too much. Even in Psychopomp which has some strong moments, there are some instrumental parts with the guitar and the violin that ‘manage’ to tire the listener.

There is no doubt though that Thank You Scientist is a group of highly talented musicians with great perception. Stranger Heads Prevail strongly indicates which direction the band wants to follow and thankfully we have an enjoyable and very interesting album.

2^nd opinion 

The music of the band from New Jersey is versatile, as TYS is a mixture of people with different origins and many musical instruments. Paradoxically, this confusing and technically complex recipe does not tire, but invites the listener to dance to pop and funky rhythms. The presence of the violin and saxophone is in terms of production in the right quantity, giving a jazzy style in an ensemble ranging from the field of experimental music to alternative metal, but always with a progressive orientation. Overall, in all compositions balance prevails in favor of the final result, while the sarcastic and playful concept of the band is already evident from the title of the album, considering the inextricable connection of the American political scene with the word ‘prevail’.

Οι Thank You Scientist μπορούν εύκολα να περιγραφούν σαν μια crossover μπάντα, αλλά νομίζω πως χρειάζεται μία παραπάνω προσπάθεια στην περιγραφή της μουσικής τους. Λίγο Jazz, λίγο big band επιρροές, εξαιρετικά δεμένο rhythm section και όλα αυτά πάντα με αρκετή δόση ενέργειας. Έτσι ίσως είναι λίγο καλύτερη η περιγραφή του ήχου τους.

Το “Stranger Heads Prevail” είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ της μπάντας από το New Jersey η οποία με την πρώτη της κυκλοφορία το 2012 “Maps of Non-Extent Places” κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον του Claudio Sanchez των Coheed and Cambria, ο οποίος τους έκανε αποκλειστικό opening act και τους προσέφερε συμβόλαιο με την Evil Ink Records η οποία επανακυκλοφόρησε τον πρώτο δίσκο τους το 2014.

Στο σεπτέτο των Thank You Scientist μπορεί να μην υπάρχει κιμπορντίστας, αλλά τα πνευστά και το βιολί δημιουργούν έναν αξιομνημόνευτο ήχο. Αυτό που είναι ιδιαίτερα ξεχωριστό στο “Stranger Heads Prevail” είναι ότι υπάρχει μία ισορροπία ανάμεσα στα διάφορα είδη. Τα πνευστά είναι ακούγονται συνεχώς μαζί με το rhythm section δημιουργώντας έναν γεμάτο ήχο. Οι ενορχηστρώσεις είναι προσεγμένες και πολλές φορές τα κλασσικά όργανα οδηγούν, δίνοντας μια big band αισθητική. Η τόσο καλή χρήση των οργάνων όπως τα πνευστά και το βιολί είναι αυτό που κάνει ξεχωριστό τον ήχο των Thank You Scientist. Οι συνθέσεις είναι όλες πολύ μελωδικές και κυρίως αρκετά ευχάριστες. Υπάρχει μια διάχυτη θετική ενέργεια σε όλο τον δίσκο. Σε αυτό βοηθούν αρκετά και τα φωνητικά του Salvatore Marrano που είναι ιδιαίτερα θεατρικά. Το “Mr. Invisible” είναι αρκετά καλό παράδειγμα των φωνητικών ικανοτήτων του Sal, αλλά και του εκρηκτικού μείγματος της μουσικής των Αμερικανών.

Κάθε μουσικός έχει κάτι θετικό να προσφέρει στον ήχο και τα κομμάτια είναι έτσι δομημένα, ώστε να υπάρχει χώρος για αυτό. O Tom Monda προσφέρει εξαιρετικά leads και γεμίσματα στο “Caverns”, ενώ το σόλο του στο “Blue Automatic” είναι απολαυστικότατο. Ο ντράμερ Odin Alvarez είναι επίσης σταθερός σε όλο το δίσκο, είτε κρατώντας ωραίο groove στα πιο γρήγορα κομμάτια όπως το “The Somnambulist”, είτε προσφέροντας μέχρι και πιο ανατολίτικο ρυθμό στο “Psychopomp”. Το θετικό με τον κάθε μουσικό να έχει το χώρο του είναι ότι κάθε σόλο -πέραν του ότι είναι τεχνικά εξαιρετικό- είναι και πολύ προσεγμένα τοποθετημένο σε κάθε κομμάτι αλλά και αυτοτελές. Και αυτό ισχύει τόσο για την κιθάρα όσο και για το σαξόφωνο και το βιολί, αλλά και τα τύμπανα.

Αναπόφευκτα όμως, ο πολύς χώρος κάποιες φορές δίνει την αίσθηση ότι κάποια κομμάτια είναι παραφορτωμένα και ίσως κάπως φλύαρα. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα κομμάτια σαν το “A Wolf in Cheap Clothing” και “Need More Input” να οδηγούν το χέρι να πατήσει next. Ακόμα και στο “Psychopomp” που έχει δυνατές στιγμές, υπάρχουν κάποια instrumental σημεία με την κιθάρα και το βιολί που καταφέρνουν να κουράζουν.

Δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία όμως ότι οι Thank You Scientist είναι μία ομάδα από ιδιαίτερα ταλαντούχους μουσικούς με εξαιρετική αντίληψη. Το “Stranger Heads Prevail” δείχνει έντονα ποια κατεύθυνση θέλει να ακολουθήσει η μπάντα και ως αποτέλεσμα έχουμε έναν διασκεδαστικό και πολύ ενδιαφέροντα δίσκο.

2^η γνώμη 

Η μουσική της μπάντας από το New Jersey είναι πολυσυλλεκτική, καθώς πρόκειται για ένα μείγμα ανθρώπων με διαφορετικές ρίζες και πολλών μουσικών οργάνων. Παραδόξως, αυτή η μπερδεμένη και πολύπλοκη τεχνικά συνταγή δεν κουράζει, αλλά προσκαλεί τον ακροατή σε χορευτικούς pop και funky ρυθμούς. Η παρουσία του βιολιού και του σαξόφωνου είναι από άποψη παραγωγής στη σωστή ποσότητα, προσδίδοντας jazz ύφος σε ένα μουσικό σύνολο που κυμαίνεται από τον πειραματικό χώρο έως το χώρο του alternative metal, πάντοτε όμως με έναν προοδευτικό προσανατολισμό. Γενικά στις συνθέσεις του δίσκου κερδίζει η ισορροπία προς όφελος του τελικού αποτελέσματος, ενώ η σαρκαστική και παιχνιδιάρικη αντίληψη του συγκροτήματος διαφαίνεται ήδη από τον τίτλο του δίσκου, αν σκεφτεί κανείς την άρρηκτη σύνδεση της Αμερικανικής πολιτικής σκηνής με τη λέξη «prevail».
