Ciccada – Harvest

One of best Greek progressive rock bands, the Athenians Ciccada, was introduced to us at the dawn of the last decade with the excellent debut A Child in the Mirror. With a sound that is not reminiscent of almost anything from 1974 onwards, Ciccada combined symphonic prog with folk and the Canterbury sound in a unique way and managed to build a strong name in the prog circles. In 2015 they released their second album titled The Finest of Miracles which sounded even more mature and focused and of course it’s another gem that has nothing to envy from well-known names of the genre. In their few but amazing live performances they sound like a well-crafted orchestra, performing with characteristic ease both their technically demanding material and covers of Camel and Genesis songs. With all this in mind, the expectations for this year’s Harvest are of course very high.

Third consecutive fine harvest

After two great albums, especially The Finest of Miracles, Ciccada are back after almost six years with their third record. Their album covers are not just a wrapper, but fully fit with the aesthetic displacement of their music. On the cover of Harvest, which is a painting by Argentine artist Pablo Solari, we primarily admire the elegant elongated figures, the bucolic landscape, the unusual facial features and their angular folds. These depicted elements largely reflect the aesthetic beauty of their music.

Around the core of the band, namely Nikolas Nikolopoulos (lots of winds and keys as well as piano), Yorgos Mouchos (guitars) and Evangelia Kozoni (vocals), Dimitra Spela was added, who shares the vocals with Evangelia, Angelos Malisovas on bass, Marietta Tsakmakli on saxophone, while drummer Yiannis Iliakis remains in the line-up for a second consecutive album. What is observed at first is that as a septet the band has acquired a stable line-up compared to the past when it consisted of several guest musicians.

So far, Ciccada have established themselves in the minds of their audience with their modest presence, their ethos and style, which may sound “old”, but on the other hand it manages not to sound like a rumination of well-known sounds, but as an elaborate stylistic amalgam that combines prog folk, symphonic prog, jazz and art music of the western European tradition in an innovative way.

Harvest offers six excellent compositions with the ultimate goal of transporting the listener to places that are intact but not unfamiliar. Six compositions that do not depart from the previous renaissance “pastoral” prog of the British school with distinct symphonic and jazz elements. Six compositions that glean their obsessions and highlight a lively and active perfectionist prog folk mystagogy. There’s no doubt that the band has a strong focus on a specific way of creation and songwriting, thanks to Yorgos Mouchos and Nikolas Nikolopoulos, the main creators of their sound palette.

The soundscapes are just as dense, but the main difference from their previous albums, especially The Finest of Miracles, is that the adventurous element and complexity have been somewhat mitigated. The well-crafted structure of the songs is clearer, without of course meaning that they have simplified their style, not at all. Their style remains multi-layered and complex. It’s just that the songwriting is more specific and targeted than ever. This is by far their richest and most mature work, always in terms of songwriting. Their prestige continues to heat in the light and in nature, where notes and nostalgic melodies of positive and spiritual contemplation alternate, leaving the indelible mark of an interactive fairy tale through images and magic. None of the six songs needs special mention; all are equal masterpieces and end up in a homogeneous and complete artistic proposal.

Harvest is the epitome of Ciccada’s compositional skill. From record to record the band grows bigger by holding arrows in its quiver, such as method, honesty and inspiration. Listen to it with headphones, escape the stalemate of the consequences of the endless lockdown and give yourself a precious gift. Capturing these sounds on vinyl is an imperative. Amen.

Six years after The Finest of Miracles seem like a lot, but knowing the leading minds of the band, Nikolas Nikolopoulos and Giorgos Mouchos, I suppose that they worked hard enough to reach the high standards that they themselves set. Consisting of six compositions, Harvest gathers the spirit and aesthetics of our beloved 70s in its 46 minutes. The almost instrumental Eniania that opens the album puts us in the world of Ciccada for good: equal doses of technical and unbridled melody with the combination of winds and electric guitar captivates the listener. Open Wings and Who’s to Decide are the softest moments of the album with the double female vocals starring. In The Old Man and the Butterfly, in which by the way guitarist Yorgos Mouchos sings, some more psychedelic ideas that match perfectly with their symphonic / folk style create a sensation. In No Man’s Land and especially in the 12 minute Queen of Wishes that closes the album things get more serious. Incredible changes of rhythms and moods, melodic peaks and a spirit of compositional transcendence characterize this exceptional material. Overall we are dealing with another great album by a band that does not follow trends and fashions, but carves its own musical path.

Μία από τις πλέον αγαπημένες ελληνικές progressive rock μπάντες, οι Αθηναίοι Ciccada μας συστήθηκαν στην αυγή της προηγούμενης δεκαετίας με το εξαιρετικό τους ντεμπούτο A Child in the Mirror. Με έναν ήχο που δεν θυμίζει σχεδόν οτιδήποτε από το 1974 και μετά, συνδύασαν μοναδικά symphonic prog με folk και Canterbury ήχους και κατάφεραν να δημιουργήσουν ένα πολύ δυνατό όνομα στους prog κύκλους. Το 2015 κυκλοφόρησαν το δεύτερο album τους ονόματι The Finest of Miracles το οποίο ακούγεται ακόμα πιο μεστό και κατασταλαγμένο και φυσικά αποτελεί ένα ακόμη διαμάντι που δεν έχει να ζηλέψει τίποτα από καταξιωμένα ονόματα του είδους. Στις λίγες αλλά καταπληκτικές live εμφανίσεις τους ακούγονται σαν μια καλοδουλεμένη ορχήστρα αποδίδοντας με χαρακτηριστική άνεση τόσο το απαιτητικό τους υλικό όσο και διασκευές σε μπάντες όπως οι Camel και οι Genesis. Έχοντας όλα αυτά κατά νου οι προσδοκίες για το φετινό Harvest είναι φυσικά υψηλότατες.

Τρίτη διαδοχική εκλεκτή σοδειά

Μετά από δύο υπέροχους δίσκους, με αποκορύφωμα το The Finest of Miracles, οι Ciccada επανέρχονται σχεδόν μετά από μία εξαετία με την πολυπόθητη τρίτη τους δημιουργία. Τα εξώφυλλά τους δεν αποτελούν απλώς ένα περιτύλιγμα, αλλά εναρμονίζονται πλήρως με το αισθητικό εκτόπισμα της μουσικής τους. Τρεις δίσκοι έως τώρα σε διάστημα 11 ετών και οι τρεις φιλοτεχνούνται από εκπληκτικά εξώφυλλα. Ομοίως και στο εξώφυλλο του Harvest, το οποίο αποτελεί προϊόν του Αργεντίνου ζωγράφου Pablo Solari, θαυμάζουμε πρωτίστως τις καλαίσθητες επιμηκυνόμενες φιγούρες, το βουκολικό τοπίο, τα εξεζητημένα ανθρώπινα χαρακτηριστικά και τις γωνιώδεις πτυχώσεις τους. Τα εν λόγω απεικονισθέντα στοιχεία απηχούν εν πολλοίς το αισθητικό κάλος της μουσικής τους.

Γύρω από τον πυρήνα του σχήματος, ήτοι τους Νικόλα Νικολόπουλο (πλειάδα πνευστών και πλήκτρων, καθώς και πιάνο), Γιώργο Μούχο (κιθάρες) και Ευαγγελία Κοζώνη (φωνητικά), προστέθηκαν η Δήμητρα Σπέλα, η οποία μοιράζεται τα φωνητικά με την Ευαγγελία Κοζώνη, ο Άγγελος Μαλισόβας στο μπάσο, η Μαριέττα Τσακμακλή στο σαξόφωνο, ενώ ο drummer Γιάννης Ηλιάκης παραμένει στο line-up για δεύτερο συνεχόμενο album. Αυτό που παρατηρείται εν πρώτοις είναι πως το σχήμα έχει αποκτήσει ως σεπτέτο μία σταθερή σύνθεση εν συγκρίσει με το παρελθόν όπου απαρτιζόταν από guest μουσικούς.

Έως τώρα οι Ciccada έχουν εδραιωθεί στις συνειδήσεις των ακροατών τους με τη σεμνή παρουσία τους, το ήθος και το ύφος τους, το οποίο ναι μεν ηχεί «παλιακό», αφετέρου όμως κατορθώνει να μην ακούγεται ως αναμηρυκασμός ήδη παραδεδομένων ήχων, αλλά ως ένα περίτεχνο υφολογικό αμάλγαμα που με καινοπρεπή τρόπο συναιρεί το prog folk, το συμφωνικό prog, την jazz και την έντεχνη μουσική της δυτικοευρωπαϊκής παράδοσης.

Το Harvest προσφέρει έξι άριστες συνθέσεις με απώτερο σκοπό τη μεταφορά του ακροατή σε τόπους ανέπαφους, αλλά όχι ανοίκειους. Έξι συνθέσεις που δεν απομακρύνονται από το προηγηθέν αναγεννησιακό «ποιμενικό» prog βρετανικής σχολής με ευδιάκριτες συμφωνικές και jazz ρανίδες. Έξι συνθέσεις που σταχυολογούν τις εμμονές τους και αναδεικνύουν μία ζώσα και δρώσα περφεξιονιστική prog folk μυσταγωγία. Είναι δεδομένο πως το σχήμα έχει έντονη στοχοπροσήλωση σε έναν συγκεκριμένο τρόπο δημιουργίας και σύνθεσης, ελέω του Γιώργου Μούχου και του Νικόλα Νικολόπουλου, των βασικών δημιουργών της ηχητικής τους παλέτας.

Τα ηχοτοπία τους είναι εξίσου πυκνά, αλλά η βασική διαφορά με τα προηγούμενά τους έργα και δη με το The Finest of Miracles, είναι πως το περιπετειώδες στοιχείο και η πολυπλοκότητα έχουν κάπως μετριαστεί. Η καλοδουλεμένη δομή των τραγουδιών είναι πιο ξεκάθαρη, δίχως φυσικά να σημαίνει ότι έχουν απλοποιήσει το στυλ τους, κάθε άλλο. Το ύφος τους παραμένει πολυστρωματικό και σύνθετο. Απλά το songwriting είναι πιο συγκεκριμένο και στοχευμένο, από κάθε άλλη φορά. Με διαφορά, λοιπόν, και τούτη θα είναι η μοναδική σύγκριση λόγω του φόβου ότι μπορεί να αδικηθούν τα προηγηθέντα albums, πρόκειται για το πιο μεστό και ώριμό τους έργο, πάντα σε επίπεδο συνθέσεων. Η αίγλη τους εξακολουθεί να πυρώνει στο φως και στη φύση, όπου νότες και ταξιδιάρικες μελωδίες νοσταλγίας θετικής και πνευματικής ενατένισης εναλλάσσονται διαδοχικά αφήνοντας ανεξίτηλο το στίγμα ενός διαδραστικού παραμυθιού μέσω εικόνων και μαγείας. Κανένα εκ των έξι τραγουδιών δεν χρήζει ειδικής αναφοράς. Όλα είναι εξίσου αριστουργηματικά και καταλήγουν σε μία ομοιογενή και ολοκληρωμένη πρόταση.

Το Harvest αποτελεί την επιτομή της συνθετικής τους δεινότητας. Από δίσκο σε δίσκο το σχήμα όλο και γιγαντώνεται κατέχοντας πολύτιμα βέλη στη φαρέτρα του, όπως μέθοδο, ειλικρίνεια και έμπνευση. Ακούστε το με ακουστικά, αποδράστε από το αδιέξοδο των συνεπειών του ατελείωτου lockdown και χαρίστε ένα πολύτιμο δώρο στον εαυτό σας. Η αποτύπωση αυτών των ήχων σε βινύλιο κρίνεται επιτακτική ανάγκη. Αμήν.
